    69 power steering cap

I have a black metal cap with a round plastic dipstick, is it suppose to have a vent hole? The repro caps do not have this hole, So which is correct? Paul klemetson

I don't know, for sure, if what appears to be a hole is actually a vent hole. Nevertheless, what you describe sounds correct. A photo would be most helpful in confirming this.

Be advised that 1969 was a "change-over" year for the power steering reservoir cap. Early cars had the cap with the round, metal cap. Later cars had a cap with a "scalloped" perimeter and which was plastic.

Joe --- does the cap need a vent hole, or will the plastic cap with no vent hole work? Paul klemetson

According to GM, the plastic cap with scalloped perimeter will SERVICE all applications originally using the steel cap. Assuming that the hole in the steel cap is actually a vent, then some sort of "non-hole" venting mechanism is apparently built into the plastic cap.

            Paul,
I've attached photos of my late 69 plastic cap. The vent hole goes through cap and tube.

I'm curious what is considered early and late in regards to this cap.

My Jan 31st car has the plastic cap and has been that way since I bought it in 88. I always assumed it was original given the condition of the car when I bought it but I'm now curious to see what you guys think.

Interesting. The late 1969 cap was GM #7803820. This part number was used from 1969 through early 1982. However, it apparently changed at least once and possibly several times over the years. All of the examples of it I have ever noted did not have a hole in the center. Instead, they usually have a blank, round "nub". They also have the additional raised lettering "DO NOT OVERFILL". Otherwise, they are similar to the cap you show.

The GM #7803820 was discontinued from SERVICE in March, 1982 and replaced by GM #7834183.

That's also interesting. I have a friend that's the originl owner of his October, 1968-built 1969. His car has the stamped steel cap.
