    Mid year vapor barrier

I'm working on a '66 convertible and the judging manual states that the vapor barrier is fastened to the door with a "tacky white rope caulk adhesive". What am I looking for and can I find this at a Lowe's or Home Depot? Is there a better alternative that still "looks" right?

I have not seen that adhesive in decades. You want something that will come off easily if you have to remove the barrier. I think Frostking makes a light gray strip material with no string that will work well for you. Home Depot.

Long Island Corvette sells the 3M rope caulk in strips. Black. The box should last a lifetime.

Thanks to you all for the quick replys - I'll get out to shop around tomorrow or Monday (Thanks to all our Vets) and let you know how I made out.

            Homer,

Let us know if you track down white strip caulk. Although LIC sells the black, the vapor barrier on my '66 was definitely attached with white.

I don't know if 3m is still producing the white. Someone may know. They still sell the black. You can get it all day at automotive paint supply outlets and even Amazon.com carries it. Acklands Grainger has white strip caulk in 3/16 in. 1 foot strips. It comes in a two pound quantity. The product number is #PRFPF301. Its under a brand called Pro-Form. Pro-Form is calling it a Dum Dum strip caulk white. It's packaged the very same way that the 3-m is packaged. My guess is that it's the same if not extremely similar. The black will perform the same function and I don't know how anyone would ever know that it was black as opposed to white. I've had both and they are the same thing except for color.

Hello; Have a box of continuous white rope caulk at purchased at Menards home improvement store a few years ago.
"Comfort seal by Dennis" 3/16" cord 90 ' long. bar code on the box 7984300200

The original white caulk cord used on Corvettes has a string embedded in the caulk, but this is a very good substitute.

Thanks again to all who responded. This is the first time I've used the Technical Discussion Board and it has been a great experience.

Actually, I stopped by an auto paint distributor and found that 3M only sells a black "rope caulk" now and then I found the same white rope caulk that Robert found at Ace Hardware yesterday. I bought 30 feet for $3.99 plus tax. It has eight strands that measure one and five eights inches across so each "rope" is slightly larger than 3/16" wide. I haven't been able to try it because while it was 70 degrees here on Sunday, it hit a low of 28 degrees today and it is too cold to do much in the garage. My doors show evidence of where most of the "old" white adhesive was originally placed.

Thanks again for everyone's great help.
