Michael - Please consider the chemical cleaning process at Metal Rehab Technologies in Ft. Worth, TX (not too far from where you are!). Their process is thorough, safe for the metal, and environmentally friendly. I've had 2 frames dipped at Metal Rehab....a '66 and most recently, my '54. They also offer to spray the frame (and other parts you take) inside and out with DP-90 epoxy primer. In addition to the frame itself, take your crossmembers, springs, control arms, wheels, and any other parts you can batch up.

My costs were:

$480 - Dipping the '54 Corvette frame and front crossmember.
$125 - Dipping a batch of various other parts - rear axle housing, crossmembers, leaf and coil springs, exhaust manifold, and the seat frame.

$425 - (Optional) Primering all the above with PPG DP90 epoxy primer (a nice semigloss black finish). They have better equipment to coat the inside of the frame and crossmembers to the point of saturation. It also provided protection on the trip back to Houston.


If you decide not to opt for the epoxy primer, then the parts come back to you coated with a water soluble rust inhibitor that lasts for a number of months until you're ready to prime it yourself. That coating easily washes off with a garden hose and once dry, is ready to prime. That's what I did with my '66 frame. With the '66 frame, I bought an undercoating spray wand from Eastwood and sprayed the Eastwood coating inside the rails with fine results. Then I sprayed the PPG DP90 on the outside.


I'm high on this company because they're good to work with, specialize in automotive metal cleaning, have a process that was chemically developed to be environmentally friendly, safe for the metal, and the results are great. There was some mention of acid leaching and issues later with painting. None of those issues with the Metal Rehab process since it is not acid based and comes back to you already rinsed and neutralized (the 3rd tank in the process). Tank number 1 is removal of grease, dirt, and paint. Tank number 2 is the derusting. Tank 3 is a rinse and final clean solution.

The process takes 2-5 days depending on the state of the frame when it enters the process. I dropped my frame off one weekend and then picked it back up 2 weekends later. I didn't have my wheels ready or I would have taken them and next time I do an engine, I'll have Metal Rehab tank the block & heads.

Michael, if you have a Redi-Strip facility located within a reasonable distance nearby you are very lucky. I had a badly rusted '67 frame and suspension components done at the Canadian west-coast location when I resided there. I couldn't have hoped for better results, although the frame was so bad (especially seams), that it had to go through their tanks twice. Cleaning agent bleed-through wasn't an issue after the entire process, (zinc phosphating as the final step) These folks were amazing to deal with also, really took an interest in my restoration. Wish I was situated closer to them these days instead of having to resort to media/blasting to clean and de-rust some of my most challenging/intricate projects. Good luck
