    1966 Rocker Molding Differences

I'm restoring my 1966 rocker molding and having them bright dipped. I noticed that the ribs on one molding stops at the corner at the radius. The other molding I have the ribs continue around the radius to the end. I started looking at other 66 corvette and pictures from the NCRS nationals and finding both designs. Does anyone have any info about this?

You got me curious Mike so I made a trip out to the shop and had a gander at my Sept. '65 built '66 roadster. The ribs on my rocker panels extend around the corner at the radius. Now, I will have to qualify my observation......the rockers were purchased at the dealer sometime in 1976 and are not the originals.

Thanks Mike, my car dates Oct. 65. I looked at two 66 corvettes today one set extended around the corner and the other stopped at the radius.

Hi Michael, I have owned a 1966 since 1967. The rocker moldings have not been removed since I have owned it, and the ribs are the short version on both sides. The VIN is in the 11K's. Regards, Ken

Based on my research the factory installed 1966 rocker moldings had smooth ends (GM # 3874527 in the 1966 AIM as well as in my 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog). The original rocker moldings on my 1966 (Feb. 1966) had smooth ends while the over the counter moldings (GM # 3933847) that I bought in the early 1980's have ribs on the ends. I also purchased a NOS 3874527 rocking molding in a thick blue & white GM paper wrapper back in the 1980's (Carlisle, PA, I assume) which also had smooth ends but sold it since I could not find a mate for it.

Refer to the link below to see my photos.

GM # 3874527 was replaced with GM # 3933874 in Oct. 1968 as per Chevrolet Parts History (service parts).

I ended up grinding and buffing the end of molding before I had it plated.

                Michael,

You used the term bright dipped originally and then above, you said the molding was plated. Did you just have them re-anodized? I'm in the same situation. I have overall good set, but them definitely have some road rash on the froward area. I could buff them down and clean them up, but haven't seen much as far as anodizing services available.

Also, if you did have them re-anodized, can you give me a ballpark of the cost?

                Thanks,

Yes, the process is to reanodize the aluminum molding. The process to remove the anodized finish leaves pits and has to be buffed and polished. The company I found to reanodize the molding is "Shine on me". Located San Clemente, CA. #949 498 8974. They do the complete job of removing, buffing, anodizing, and repainting the molding. Or you can send the molding stripped and buffed, only have them do the anodizeing process and paint it yourself. I believe the total cost minus paint and shipping was $600.00 for the pair. Also I had to make a wooden box to ship it.
