Best way to pull/replace oil fill tube on car

Don't believe I ever did this on a plain oil fill tube; but my son has a 62 fuelie that he wants to replace the oil fill tube due to a previous points deduction for incorrect color. I have used a slide hammer with inside jaws on my 63, but that has an internal lip on it with the notches for the fill cap (easy job). So, what can we use to get a hold on a plain round fill tube. He has heard that they should be loose enough to tap back and forth a little with something like a rubber hammer in order to work it out of the manifold. He wants to save the tube and perhaps repaint it later, but only has a few weeks to go before our Chapter Meet and little free time to make these improvements. Any ideas???

    Would a strap wrench help?

Thanks Jim and Tracy. Both good ideas. My son says he's running out of time as he keeps picking up new flights (jetBlue Pilot), but he as yet to give me a key to his shop so I can't help him more than get good ideas. I have a strap wrench that might help, but I would need to buy a dowel as all my stock is too small.

        Thanks again.

The wooden dowel method Tracy mentioned has worked for me.

The end of a wooden broom handle works!

              John;

Now that I have. You sure can get enough leverage with that if needed. Thanks for the suggestion.

I might add, as a word of caution to anyone else planning to do this; when you install a new tube, be oh so careful you don't drive it down too deep. I'd recommend you measure the depth of engagement of the old tube and then not to exceed that dimension with the new one. Don't ask me how I know except to say aluminum cracks real easy - ouch!

Stu, I actually use a broom handle to paint the oil filler tube anargent silver with a green tint. Paint is a custom blend.
Not really sure if my color is 100% correct but the judges, etc love them. Therefore so do I. haha JD

I recently replaced a fill tube on a '60 dual-four aluminum manifold. The old one was incorrect type so it wasn't important to save it. I used a large pair of "water pump" pliers using a twisting motion as I was afraid to damage the intake if I used the rocking-back-and-forth method.

I think if I wanted to save it I'd choose is the twisting method to minimize damage to the intake. A inside expanding tool, like a exhaust pipe expander inserted up high in the tube could be used to keep the it properly shaped and rigid, then a strap wrench up high on the tube to twist it out. A few wraps of thin rubber sheet around the outside of the tube may help the process, much like using those rubber jar openers in the kitchen drawer.(just don't tell her you took it!)

                    Thanks John and Rich.

John; when you say your paint is a special blend, is that something commercially available or did you have it mixed?

Rich; I can't picture in my mind what an exhaust pipe expander looks like. Is that something I could possibly get a hold on with my slide hammer tool?

Thanks to everyone for your great ideas. I've learned a lot. Strange that in all my years i never ran into this situation before. Like I said; my 63 was easy with the slide hammer tool as you have something to get a hold of.

Stu, we used a broom stick on a 653 aluminum manifold but over a period of 3 days put a little 3 in 1 oil around the tube to flow between the tube and manifold. Good Luck! Steve

Photo below shows a typical exhaust pipe expander.

Yes that type. Thanks for showing that for Stu.....

Just searched around and here's a pretty nice kit that I may buy myself for future "expansion" projects..... Maybe a bit too pricey.

It's setup for 3/8" to 1 5/8" tubing in 1/8" steps. I forget what the ID of the oil fill tube is. I'll check later. It's made to expand the diameter, but it could be used for to just keep enough pressure on the tube to use the strap wrench to twist the tube out. A way to attach to a slide hammer would be good too. This one is hydraulic with a handle that could possibly be adapted to one.

Probably way overkill for the task.......but I just Love tools!

Thanks John and Rich. That is a nice tool, and I too am a sucker for tools. I've been known to pop for something like that for one job, and then never use it again. My problem now, in my old age, I forget either that I have some tool or where I put the darn thing. I'm still looking for things from our last move from Illinois here to Florida. I know I gave away a lot of stuff to a hot rod kid a couple doors down, but I can't accept the idea that I would have given him some of the stuff I really miss. I dumped all my Holley stuff on him, and I don't miss that.

John D. Sorry I asked about your special blend paint. Forgot you still have a business to run and need to guard your proprietory info.

Stu, You would be better off trashing that original tube and putting in a new one. You got various tubes above. Be careful though beating on it with brute force as you can split the intake. At least on the FI cars you can.
Paint is custom blended with seat of the pants formula. Not readily available. In the old days you could get it in a spray can. Those days are gone.
