    66 Alternator date

The TIM&JG simply say that the alternator date needs to precede the car manufacture date. Is a February 66 alternator to early for a July 66 built car? I assume best to be within 4 months.

This one is 5 months before car build date. I just rebuilt this one including stamping the diodes myself. I found an inexpensive source for rubber stamps and order a diode dated set.

I have a later dated alternator that I will eventually take apart and stamp new diodes.

    Thanks, Don

    Re: 66 Alternator date

NCRS typically allows up to SIX months prior to build date on everything that is date-coded, except for glass which is 1-year allowance. Now, in the newer models (i.e. 1990 and newer) there are some nuances that are taken into consideration, such as some of the items under the hood for the ZR1

      Re: 66 Alternator date

Realistically I believe that alternators were dated within about one month in most cases. My 1966 Corvette (Feb. 24, 1966 body build date) came with a 1100693 alternator dated 6 B 17 (Feb. 17, 1966).

I used Arial 8 Bold. I got the stamps from an on-line place rubberstampchamp.com. They were under $5 each as I recall. I got black and red permanent ink pads at Michael's arts and crafts store.

I bought a couple of well used correct alternators off ebay. They looked pretty rough, but would spin and the internals looked good just dirty and no significant rust. I took them apart, cleaned the internals and rotor, used emery cloth to smooth the slip rings if needed. Then installed new bearings, diodes, etc. There are a couple of places that sell rebuild kits for the Delco Remy 10DN alternators. I don't really know anything about the electronics involved, so if they didn't work when I put them back together, then I would have a problem. I've been lucky so far, I did four for my 66 and 67 and one for a friend and they all function perfectly.

I also found the caramel colored varnish to use on the stator. There is some disagreement whether this varnish should be caramel colored or black, but I'm going by the Judging Guide which says caramel colored.

Don, did you use a 1" stamp?? Or does it matter with this company.

I think they are 3/4", but not sure it matters.

Thanks for Pix and Info... I also used Rubberstampchamp.com for the 2 stamps. Fast turnaround and low price after a Proof Adjust. I had both dated a Month Before my Recently Rebuilt Delco Correct Dated Alternator that Looked Nice except for Lack of Diode Stamping. I modified the Wooden Base of Both to allow enough Room to Stamp Both Neg and Recessed Positives without Disasembly of the Alternator..Saw no reason to take it apart...Thanks again..
