    timing chain cover

Can anyone show a picture of a 1971 lt1 timing chain cover and or describe it for me? I have a cover that goes on my 71 lt1 that is chrome and has a bolt on pointer also chrome, I don't think they are correct. The pointer shows 16 degrees before tdc and 8 degrees after tdc. Thanks in advance,Phil..

I don't have the 1970-72 TIMJG in front of me, but it is detailed in there. IIRC it obviously should not be chromed, it should have a bolt on timing tab (saw toothed on forward edge) -14/+14 I believe.

The timing cover had a "tri-spoke" configuration in the center. You're looking for one without a welded-on timing tab. If the chrome one you have is "tri-spoke", you may be able to remove the chrome and use it. However, it would probably be easier just to find a good used example; these things are not rare.

You can obtain a bolt-on timing tab under GM #3991436. This is the original timing tab part number but it's possible it might differ in very minor ways. It's now GM-discontinued but you should be able to find one on eBay or in dealer stock.

The below link shows the configuration of the cover you're looking for. This one is an aftermarket piece but it's configuration is very close, if not identical, to the originals. It's probably Chinese-manufactured but it might still be OK. In any event, you can use this picture when looking for an original.
