The engine (283) has about 400 miles since rebuild. Just started to hear a metallic clattering sound. Had not occurred previously. It is not present at idle (about 450 RPM), commences beyond idle, and terminates at about 1000 RPM. So it only occurs within a limited RPM range. Sound seems to be mid to right side of engine. The valves (hydraulic) have been adjusted previously to 3/4" beyond clatter. Oil is full and pressure per gauge reading is fine. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

Re: C1 Engine Issue: Clattering
Upon further reflection, early on I had the same issue. The problem was the flywheel hitting the inspection cover. I thought I had corrected the problem, but in all likelihood it has returned.- Top

Re: C1 Engine Issue: Clattering
Richard, I remember that and IIRC you repositioned it and was then okay. Hopefully that's all it is. But Duke is right, it's hard to diagnose over the wire like this. Either get a helper to listen with a stethoscope or similar to narrow it down. If it's that inspection cover you may want to pull the starter and the cover and give a few good wacks with a hammer to keep it tight against the lip of the oilpan.
Just a FYI, and a guess, but........
My '63 started making some noises which sounded like engine internals too but was only a loose crankshaft pulley. Sounded nasty and I was quite relieved it wasn't inside the 68k mile original engine.
Good Luck,
Rich
p.s. nice cool weather for you Floridians(including me) to use our old C1's now.
My '59 rests during the summer and rides in winter now. She like's it!

Re: C1 Engine Issue: Clattering
A follow-up: the clatter was associated with the inspection pan and has now, hopefully, been corrected permanently. Thanks to all for your input. As always, support from fellow restorers is essential, at least for me, for success.- Top

Re: C1 Engine Issue: Clattering
Been there, done that, about 20 years ago, at first-fire of the '57 I was restoring at the time - when it fired, it sounded like I was in a tin outhouse in a hailstorm. Reason? ARP flywheel bolts are about 1/16" longer than the GM bolts, just long enough to interfere with the sheet metal inspection cover. No damage, just a helluva racket!- Top
