    66 Oil Pan

I'm gathering parts to do a restoration on my 66 L79 Coupe. I need a picture of a correct oil pan. The TIM & JG give a description but a picture, is worth a thousand words. I would like to see the bottom with the drain configuration and both sides with the ribs.

Also, the TIM & JG describe it as a 5 quart pan. My 66 owners guide list the capacity for the 300, 390 HP engines at 4 quarts, and the 350, 425 HP engines at 5 quarts, plus one quart for the filter. So this suggest that the 300 HP car had a different pan. But there is no mention of that in the TIM & JG.

Even more confusing is that LIC as a pan that is described as Oil Pan 327 (250-300,350hp)(4 Qt)correct) With Correct "a" Drain Plug
    100% correct! import repro
. It is listed as correct for 63-67 and all 327 engines.

Is the correct pan a 5+1 quart?
Is the L79 pan different than the 300HP pan?
Does anyone know of a correct reproduction? That is if the LIC one isn't correct which is assume if it is a 4 quart pan.

    Thanks,

    Don Harris

    Re: 66 Oil Pan

    Don:

The 1966 327/350 HP engine has a 4 quart pan...........same as the 300 HP. Keen Parts makes the correct repro and sells through their own store as well as LICS and others.

It is possible that EARLY 1965 327/350 HP cars had the SHP extra capacity pan (5 qt pan). But by the end of 1965 and 1966, the 327/350 HP cars had the standard pan.

Have you purchased one of the reproduction ones? I looked at the LIC one on-line and just looked at Keen picture. It's hard to tell, but they don't look like the sump could be 10 1/2" as described in the TIM & JG. But of course, I'm looking at a picture.

        Donald:

No, I have not purchased one...........but I know folks that have.

I checked the 1965 and 1966 and 1967 Judging Manuals, and all basically say the same thing for the hydraulic lifter small block engines.

The 1965 Judging Manual for the small block solid lifter engines says that the pan has a 6 quart capacity and has 13-1/2 inch long lower sump with two dimpled depressions on each side. It seems that all the judging manuals are listing the pan capacity as the total oil system capacity (which can often be misleading).

Believe me, the Keen $$$$ pan is the one you need if you want to appear correct/original.

I'll take your recommendation. Not sure if I will have the car judged, but I want to do an NCRS correct restoration just in case. I don't mind loosing a few points, but don't like loosing the whole line item for Originality and Condition.
