1964 Heater Hose Markings or Not?!?!

Are one or both of the heater hoses on a '64 327/300 engine supposed to be ribbed and have the "GM" marking in red on one hose and white on the other hose? I got nicked for them being "NTPF" at the last regional that my car was judged at and want to make it correct since I have to change the battery that just went bad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    James West

Jim, according to the JM the 5/8 hose is not ribbed ( generally) as stated, The 3/4 hose is ribbed. As far as the logos I was told here on the TDB that there were no logos, and the new JM says may have??

      James,

The heater hose ink stamp/rib debate has been going on for several decades. (I'm pretty sure I started all of this around 1981)

One of the things that I learned when inspecting pieces of original heater hose on ultra low mileage cars in the mid 70's was that only some of the hoses on some of the cars had the GM logo. Most did not.
Some cars had a mixture of hose with the logo on some and not on others. For example, some had the GM logo on only one piece of the 3/4" hose but not the other. One piece from the heater to the T fitting may have had the GM logo while the 3/4" piece from the T fitting to the water pump may not have had the GM logo.

I also learned that if the hose had ribs, it wouldn't have the GM logo. I don't remember ever seeing both ribs and th GM logo on the same hose.

The GM logo was typically in dark red, almost maroon.

It so faint that you could hardly see it. Not anything like a typical reproduction hose from many years ago. (I think the reproduction folks figured out how to tone it down)

I learned that the white (very light grey) GM logo didn't show up until late in 65 or early 66 production.

The style of the GM characters changed about the same time that the white color showed up for 66.

In 1975, I ordered and received a complete heater installation package from GM. It included one 5/8" hose with GM logo in white and one ribbed 3/4" ribbed hose with no GM logo.

Hopefully, owners that have proudly displayed their cars with all the heater hose rotated with the GM logo showing will rotate the hose to hide it.

If I were restoring/showing a 63-64 today, I would definitely use ribbed hose.
