'62 Spare Tire Fit in Trunk

'62 spare 6.70 x15 Firestone Deluxe Champion fits in tub O.K. but is too tall (fat) to allow the spare tire board to seat in a flat position. The spare holds the board about 1/2" too high to allow a flat trunk. What is the solution ? (it's inflated to 28 psi.). Thanks in advance.

This has been a problem for years. As I understand it back in the day tires were stacked on top of each other right out of the mold, this caused the tire to shrink a little. Newer tires are inflated with air right away and there fore remain a little wider. Someone with tire building experience should jump in and correct me if I'm wrong. In any event you can try deflating tire a little bit, didn't work for me and leaves you with a not so good spare tire. A donut style spare fits, also search the archives as this has been discussed a few times.

i had read recently (wish i could remember where it was) ...that the Coker tire mold for the firestone tires in question is/was actually a 770 x 15 mold not really a 670/15 and the mold's lettering was altered to show 670 as correct, when the tire is actually a 770... has been that way for years..... thats why it does not fit... it is "fatter".. my brand new ones are the same way.

I have an original Firestone Deluxe Champion 670/15 as the spare...and it fits fine. I don't remember if its a nylon or rayon cord tire, but it's profile is clearly narrower than the Coker polys I have on the ground. A guy at a local show said that he lets the air out of his spare allowing him to get the lid to close better. Guess he's wasn't worried about getting a flat. And if you plan to PV your car, that spare better have good air pressure.

yes the orignal tires were actually 670/15. the reproduction tires are actually 770/15 . To confirm, jus measure the section width of the new Coker's, (that is the across widest point sidewall to sidewall of the mounted tire)... its actually 770...so the tire board is just not going to fit flush as it was designed to with the larger fatter tire in the spare tire well. I do not know of anyone who actually makes a real 670 x 15 bias ply tire.
