Mid Year Glove Compartment Lock Operation

It has been brought to my attention that in Operations Judging owners have been asked to move the the glove compartment lock with the key to a position between LOCK & UNLOCK & then asked to see if the key can be removed & if the key can be removed there is a deduction. Personally, I figure if the glove compartment lock locks the glove compartment lock in the LOCK position & unlocks the glove compartment lock in the UNLOCK position, there is little valve in knowing that the key can be removed from the lock in a position between the LOCK & UNLOCK positions.

It sounds like a variation of the "test" for the key removal of the ignition switch but as far as I can tell, there is no description of such a "test" in the mid-year Owners Guides/Manuals.

Inquiring minding want to know the GM and/or Briggs & Stratton engineering specification basis for this "test."

    Thanks, Pete

    Pete,
The print for the key and or lockset will show this if it was a requirement. And I agree, it would be good to stick to originality.

I can attest to what Pete says, got deduct in ops check at Texas regional. Key/lock works smoothly to lock and unlock, but key can come out if turned partway. Have mailed to Pete to try for 'fix' so no further deducts.

Incredible - Who invented the requirement? Does it specifically state that for g-box and tire lock in the JG?

Door and ignition key get a lot of use understandable and a real for the ignition, but glove box and tire lock? Please and excuse me, they hardly ever got used - like once every five year use, so before someone starts making a new rule, they better have verification it was supposed to be that way from the factory.

          Ron,

I've dealt with more than 100 spare tire locks over the past 10 years and I've never worked on a tire lock where the key could be removed with the lock cylinder rotated past the key insert position. I don't think the glove box key issue under discussion applies to the spare tire lock.

            Pete,

I just tried the set you punched for me from the numbers some years ago, and the glove box key works the way the JG says. You can't pull it out, if it is not in the lock or unlock position. Never realized this.

Also tried my everyday driver keys, the larger head sized ones ground from the originals. The glove box key pulls out in any position, But!! you can feel the resistance to pullout in the off position.

This is all well and good. My g/b locks key removal is only in lock or unlock position, so what? Do we check to see if you can start the car with the clutch depressed half way? Tire pressure? What color is the antifreeze? What is the travel side to side with the shifter in neutral? Are all the fuses checked for correct amp? How about stopping the car from 40 MPH with the parking brake? How about the volume of the directional flasher? Time the clock reset to 90 seconds? The best ever would be to measure the front and rear ride heights.

The problem as I see it is the cars are getting so good that we are digging deeper & deeper in an attempt to find points deductions. I believe this has to stop. Just reflect on what we might be judging 10,20 years into the future. Just my .02 cents worth.

Where does the line cross between just operations and A PV . This glove box operation that the key should not be removable midway between lock and unlock sounds like part of a PV ???

Big difference in operations and PV. Some judges cannot distinguish between the two.

I just looked at the 63 JG for Glove Box Lock. There is NO mention of pulling the key. Essentially all it says is lock and unlock smoothly, open and close without slamming.

Whoever started the other thread about this should notify his Team Leader and complain.

If the Team Leader wants to pull the key during PV that is a different judging process.

Inquiring mind would like to know if this spell out in the PV guide. In the new 1966 judging manual this is how it is spelled out in the operations section.

" The glove compartment door should latch and unlatch smoothly and easily without slamming. 1966 models utilized the oval key to operate the lock and the spare tire lock. Excessive force should not be required."

anything else is is a witch hunt.

An attempt has been made to describe and illustrate as designed, intended and expected glove box key and lock operation, a minor item within our judging program.

The challenge is to provide detailed technical information and combine it within a one and the same judging guide,i.e. the CTIM&JG in both a true and practical format.

Operations guidelines indicate as long as a key turns a lock in a direction and the object latches, locks and unlocks the item passes.

PV guidelines indicate a single round-end key must operate the glove box lock and spare tire lock...

After applying all details and logic, key insertion and removal position as well as CDCIF mean nothing in terms of an award, yet may be a valid observation within a purely technical definition of operation.
