    66 directional stalk housing

The section which houses the directional lever on my 66 non tele column is rotating about 10 degrees in each direction. What is supposed to hold this in place? I guess I have to pull the steering wheel but the drawings I have looked at aren't that clear about what I'm looking for.

It didn't used to do this, so something fell out or broke.

Any Saturday night advice is appreciated.

    Rich -

There's a round stamped sheet metal retainer with slots in it that keys onto the "tangs" at the top end of the steering mast jacket tube; it also has three holes in it. The three screws that attach the turn signal switch also go through the holes in the round retainer, and thread into tapped holes on the inside diameter of the die-cast turn signal housing. Those three screws may be loose, or you might have one or more broken "tangs" on the jacket.

Thank you. The picture is very useful. I'll look into it tomorrow and post what I find.

        Re: 66 directional stalk housing

Took this apart today and the good news is, tightening everything up makes the problem no longer noticeable since the force required to move the lever is less than the force to rotate the collar. However, the collar can still be moved. Upon further review there appears to be a part missing, called the "steering collar screw and wedge" according to the LICS catalog drawings. The confusing part is that LICS says this is a 63 only part. So, I may have a 63 steering column in this 66 or just the collar from a 63.

I ordered the part. There is a place for it on the collar but it may not do anything if the internals are not the same. In any case, the issue is over for now. My friend has a couple of 63's and a 66 or two I can look at when I get a chance. I never looked at that detail before. The saga of "Franken Car" continues. But it drives so good!

Well, just looked at two 65's and they have the collar like my 66. One 63 I looked at does not have the indentation for the "wedge".

          More to follow.
