    C2 Power Steering Fluid

I just got a re-manufactured power steering pump for my 67. It looks very correct and original.

What would be a recommended modern day power steering fluid for it.

I understand that I will be draining and bleeding the entire power steering system to install it.
Just want to get the right fluid.

Before I put the pump on, is there a way to check for leaks.

Jerry, The P/ strg.system is just Dexron trans. fluid. you can buy a synth. brand ATF , I know of no way to check for leaks before installing the pump.

The type of fluid would depend at least partially on the elastomer materials used in the rebuild, which may differ from when it was new. So what does the remanufacturer recommend?

I went through a big analysis of this a few years ago when I wanted to flush the power steering system in my '88 Mercedes. Of course, Mercedes' recommendation is "Mercedes-Benz power steering fluid".

I went so far as to look at the specs for all the various Chevron hydraulic fluids, but finally ended up buying an inexpensive generic power steering fluid at Pep Boys. So far so good.

When I had to add a little fluid to my MR2's electro-hydraulic power steering system, I went ahead and bought an expensive liter from Toyota (unique to the system on these second generation MR2s), but split it with another owner to ease the cost.

Honda also requires a "special" fluid. I have no idea why, but most parts stores carry inexpensive aftermarket brands of this "special" fluid.

It would be so nice if the industry could standardize on PS fluids like they do, for the most part, on engine and drivetrain lubricants.

If you investigate it, they actually are a bit different. You can use ATF in a pinch, but I'd recommend the least expensive power steering fluid you can find at the parts store. Buy a quart and you're probably good to go.
I've replaced the systems in a 72 Corvette and a 70 Cutlass recently. Thankfully minimal problems with leaks or oozing. If you're careful and deliberate when tightening the connections you'll do fine.

Note that I found that the hoses currently available for Corvettes are NOT bent like the originals. You will need to check that they don't rub the exhaust or the bracket on the left frame rail when moving the steering wheel back and forth. Yes, it's one of those "don't ask how I know" comments.

I recommend GM Cold Climate Power Steering Fluid (even if you don't live in a cold climate). GM #12345866 (pint) or GM #12345867 (quart).
