    '71 compressor question

A while ago I picked up a compressor fir my '72 with the superheat switch, #5910782. I'm aware that it's a '71 part but I have a couple of questions

As far as I can tell it's from a '71 Impala OR truck. It came with the original A/c hoses and some brackets, in pretty good shape, just dirty. Is there any way to identify the specific application? Model vehicle, engine size, etc... I'm sure someone could use the hoses and brackets if I could find out what they're for.

Aside from the sticker is this correctly configured for a '72?

I can post pics if they would help.

    Thanks!!

At least according to my 1980 Hollanders's, the only use other than '72-73 Corvette for the same Compressor was '75 Monza. Original part number 6598452.

      Tom,
The pulley size (diameter) may be wrong for your 72 along with any brackets that are bolted on.
If the pulley looks like your old one (size & spacing) it should bolt right on. If it's only the diameter then you only need to change the belt.
I see a lot of compressors with the wrong size pulleys that work just fine. GM used a 5 3/4 diameter on the high rev mid year vette engines and even a larger one on the HP 327's. They tamed the engines down in the last part of 71 and the 4" pulley may be stock for the 72 along with the passenger cars and trucks.
The 4" seems to be the size used most on cars & trucks.

I meaured the pulley on the compressor I noted and the one that came with the car. They were both 5". The #5910782 compressor has a 2 grove pulley, perhaps a clue to finding where it came from.

The label on the compressor that came with the car, in a box, was an Oldsmobile one. The info on the tag and back plate is not well preserved, but here I go.

        Model 590486

        Code 121711

        Casting date 1 1 5

This may or may not help but any is appreciated. HAve fun!!
