    Gasoline Smell

1962 Corvette. Has persistent heavy gasoline smell especially when tank is over half full. Have tried vented and non- vented gas caps with no noticeable improvement. Everything in fuel system has been replaced with new repo parts. Filler pipe, fuel lines, vent line, gas tank, gas cap, etc. . No signs of leak around carb or fuel pump. Help. TD King, 828 606 1227 or kingtd10@gmail.com. And thanks in advance.

You should use a non-vented cap since the top of the tank has a vent line that routes up to the filler area over the gas cap. I would double check all the lines, clamps, and gas tank. Take off the tank cover again and drive around, open the top cover and check for leaks. Since gas evaporates fairly fast, look quickly. Also check your line all along the frame rail, past the fuel pump, up to the carb.

"Especially when the tank is over half full" is telling. When the tank is full, gas will slosh up the filler pipe on right hand turns. There's a Chevrolet Service Bulletin on this. Sometimes I'll find my fill area wet with gas. My car has a new modern aftermarket cap and the original Fuller Emerson cap. Both seem to leak. The rubber filler pipe connector can leak, especially if it is old. Your tank could also have a hole in its top half. There's also a vent line and gas gauge in the top half of the tank.

Try filling the tank and driving around with the tank cover off. Make lots of right hand turns. See if any area is wet in there.

Gas Caps--NAPA-703-1205, Stant-10810, Standard-CST 6810, are all caps that fit. Check to make sure cap fits tight, might have to bend the tabs a little to get a good tight fit with aftermarket filler tube.

          TD -

This article covers the entire subject of fixing C1 cockpit fuel odor - it was also printed in the "Restorer" a couple of years ago (don't recall the issue #).
