No Build Sheet on my gas tank, now what?

Okay I took the gas tank out of my 71 LS5 and was very careful in doing it. The tank was really dirty and I looked before lowering it, did find some fiberglass repair on the inside rear corner so maybe the tank has been out before, not sure. But as I said I am doing a body on restoration and I do not have a build sheet. Looked carefully and just a lot of dirt and crap on the tank (it was really bad). So now what, no build sheet, did find a date on the body on the inside above the tank Nov 1970, it does have the date there too, Its in white marker, This date says GTR before it. Is this a date the body was put on, or is it something else, what does the GTR stand for?

Any ideas on how I could find out about this car or maybe get the build information some how?

Did clean the tank very well and found two 1 inch clue spots on the upper passenger side of the tank, I am assuming that is where the build sheet was at one time. Well have to look all over these old Vette hoping to find something. Crap!

GTR could be an inspector's initials/mark. What date did you find with the initials?

Can you contact previous owners of your car to determine whether they have any of the origihnal documentation for the car?

Without a build sheet, you may not even have a Corvette.

Have you looked under the dash in between the tach & speedo? Sometimes you find one under the carpeting, inside of a door, stuffed in the bottom of a seat.

I found my 68's build sheet behind the radio when I removed it and found my 70's build sheet between the backs of the speedometer and tach.

The vast majority of old Corvettes either had no tank sticker to start with or it's disappeared/become unreadable over the years. GM has no records of how your specific car was built so you're left with doing detective work on the car itself or with previous owners.

That is the date after the GTR!
As for contacting the past owners I have a DMV record from an owner 10 years ago (it had blown way back behind the ventilation box). The the guy I purchased it from did not seem to know very much but yes I will ask again about the car.

Okay, I am going through the car so I will keep my eyes open for it in other places, the car looks complete and original so I know what type of Vette it is and the inside of the car has not had any major changes. I hope it was not in the seats as they have been redone in the recent past.
Funny how people have no problems just tossing out stuff when they have no idea what it is. I hope I find something in the car as I go. Thanks

My Sept build 71 LS5 did not have a tank sticker either. I didn't find one behind the gauges or radio. I have not had any reason to remove the seats or lift the carpet, so I'm still holding out hope for something there one day.

As an added plus........ My car is in a group of serial numbers where any sort of delivery documentation was either lost or destroyed.

"GTR" was General Tire & Rubber Co. - their "GenCorp" division made many of your body panels.

My 68 had a really nice build sheet on the tank when I dropped it, sadly it didn't match the options on the car. Wish it was the L89 listed Take care and happy looking. Steve
