    Of course...

Isn't it always the way. I just got the repop ignition shield kit for my 69 and I went to bend the static ground clip and broke it in half. This thing is BRITTLE!

    So my two questions are:

    1. Where can I find another one (I looked in all the usual repop houses and no go).
    2. How do you bend them without breaking them???

    Thanks

    Re: Of course...

I believe the ground is draw formed so, it won't tolerate bending. Probably get another one, and the attaching rivets, from Paragon or most other parts places.

Come to think of it, I'll bet Richard Fortier has one.

      Ralph,
It was a joy to see you in Frisco, even if only briefly. Safe travels.

My friend, although I didn't have the pleasure of shaking your hand, I look forward to buying you an adult beverage in FL.

Well, that explains why it broke! I wish the repop houses would put some kind of instructions in the kits to let you know this.

I checked all the repop houses and no one sells the ground for the C3. C2, yes, but not the C3.

I'll send an email to Richard Fortier and see what he has. BUT.... even if I find one, HOW am I going to bend it??

The ground is configured differently, for different applications. If it is properly configured, you shouldn't have to bend it.

Ed, Years ago the big parts houses did sell these parts for C3s, There were/are two configurations. Back then careful bending was not a problem. Aside from the lack of availability now, something else has changed. The one I bought from Paragon was bendable.

I think they will tolerate very slight bending but, one gazillionth of a millimeter too much and...BAM!!

                  Re: Of course...

Thanks guys. The one I got came loose (I have to attach) and wasn't pre-bent. Since it appears you can't bend these things, then I'm not going to spend the money to get another and have it break on me too. Instead I think what I'm going to do is go down to my local metal recycler (about 1/2 mile away) and see what they have in the way of a thin strip of stainless banding (they have ALL KINDS of stuff there). I'll get a few feet of that and "make" my own! I KNOW you can bend stainless banding!!

                    Re: Of course...

My 1970 has three holes in the distributor box and the ground detail had only two. The type of carburetor(s) (the same style box is used in 1969) dictated the location of the ground detail. The 1970 AIM has instructions on which set of holes to use. I am not sure about that page in other year AIMs, but I believe the proper installation is important regarding the amount of bending needed for the installation. Check it out.

                      Re: Of course...

That's correct. The 4bbl setup had the strap mounted to the top two holes facing down, and the teeth were bent up. The 3x2 setup had the strap mounted to the bottom two holes and the teeth were bent down.

HERE'S some really good pictures of an original 4bbl setup on ebay. You can see the bend is approx 45 degrees.
