Just got my master cylinder resleeved. Looking to paint it? What type of black paint are most using? Epoxy semi gloss???? I understand Dot 3 and 4 glycol fluid destroys paint...what about using DOT 5 silicone based?

Re: 67' brake master cylinder painting
These master cylinders were painted a very low gloss black. It was not flat black but it was very low gloss. I think you will find most semi-gloss paints to be too glossy.
Glycol-based brake fluids (i.e. DOT 3, 4, 5.1) marr and lift paint very quickly. Silicone-based fluid (DOT 5) does not attack paint. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67' brake master cylinder painting
Dave,
If you are going for judging; the master cylinders were painted before machining. The flat areas where the lines are attached as well as the small half moon recess in the front were typically free of paint.
***DOT 5 brake fluid does NOT mix with any other brake fluid. If you convert your car to DOT 5, you need to flush all the lines with alcohol to remove all old fluid and any residue. The calipers should also be disassembled and cleaned for trouble free operation.
Hope this helps.

Re: 67' brake master cylinder painting
So if its a low gloss do you think Krylon 1613 will work; I believe this is semi flat. I says it is an acrylic lacquer...is this durable enough?? What would be the difference between lacquer and epoxy??- Top

Re: 67' brake master cylinder painting
The 1613 would work. Typically the lacquer paint is thinner and less durable than enamels or epoxies. I've used the low gloss black engine enamel (gas and oil resistant). I believe it is from Dupli-Color. Only caution is: that paint is somewhat sensitive to humidity (can be a problem down here in FLA.)- Top
