    points deduction for replacment carpet??

1961 black carpet was replaced jus before I got the car.. Its a very good fitting nice carpet set.... but... its all black, not the tuxedo type salt n pepper ... almost OLIVE color of the original black carpet.. can anyone give me an idea of the points deduction this would probably cause??? It otherwise should be very closeto top flight (except the damn crazy windshield washers!!LOL) ... any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

I'm no expert, but I took my 1960 that I restored through judging this year and got top flight at Regional in Bowling Green and National at Hampton. So if you look at the score sheet for the 58-62 for the interior it is as follows:

    2. Carpet
    Originality Condition
    10 10 Color
    15 10 Carpet Weave
    5 5 Seams, bindings, & fit
5 5 Dimmer bezel & carpet retaining screws

You can loose a total of 270 points and still make top flight. The carpet total is 65, so the carpet alone will not keep you out of top flight. Also, if you loose all the originality points for a item, you automatically loose all the condition points. So, assuming your color is not correct you will loose 20 points (10 for originality and 10 for condition), and so on.

If you have it judged and loose all your points for carpet and do not make top flight, then that is not a real expensive fix if you do your own work. The carpet isn't difficult to install if you do your own work and not terribly expensive, about $250 for a set.

The biggest single area to make sure you have correct is that you do not loose any points in the Operations judging. If you haven't already done so, download the judging sheets, purchase the Judging Reference Manual and self judge your car. I did mine a number of time and actually scored better at the events that I had scored my car.

thanks Don, I was not aware that if a part is not exactly as original, you would lose ALL originality points and you would then also automatically lose all condition points too... no partial originality points for a very similar replacement part?

No, it doesn't have to be exactly as original. For example, if the color of the carpet is a little off in the eye of a particular interior judge, the Judge can deduct 1 or 2 points for originality, And if the condition is good, then the judge will not deduct anything for condition. So instead of loosing 20 points for Color, you would only loose 2. I was making an assumption that since your carpet is not the Tuxedo carpet a judge "may" deduct the full 10 points for originality.

Nothing has to be 'original'. The judging standard is CDCIF:

C - Configuration - manner in which components are shaped, molded, cast or machined: part number, casting mark/logo should be considered part of the configuration
D - Date - degree to which the component date conforms to the logical sequence of manufacture and typically observed GD supply sourcing intervals. The date may be distinguished by means other than being stamped, cast, etc, into a component
C - Completeness - degree to which the component is totally present
I - Installation - degree to which the component is installed correctly
F - Finish - degree to which the component finish, gloss, texture, color, tint and type conform to our judging standard.

Judges use these guidelines when looking at a component and assigning any deducts. Based on my two experiences, the judges were more than fair in their assessment of my car.

If you are going to have your car judged, you need to get the Judging Reference Manual and study it.
