1966 Pitting around the VIN and TRIM tags

I'm in the market for a 66 or 67 convertible. I saw a 66 on Craigslist and called the guy. He's not into the car details much. I asked him a few questions and he really does not know much about the car. He sent me a link to some pictures. I don't want to spend the money to go look at the car unless I think its worth the trip.

One thing that scares me is in the attached picture of the VIN. The bird cast section where the VIN is attached seems to be really pitted. Not sure how that could happen unless the car spent some time outside in some pretty bad weather.

I have a 66 coupe and that area of my coupe is very clean and retains a lot of the greenish primer.

    Thanks,

I never seen one that bad . I wonder what the bird cage and window frame looks like ? That one needs a good inspection on a rack .

I have owned many many mid years and have never seen rust like that... It looks like it was in salt water or lived real close to it at one time...IMHO...

I think I will just pass on this one and keep looking.

Probably the bar out of a junk yard car.

That was my thought. Hard to say without a look at the whole car.

Rust and pitting aside.......Doesn't anyone have any issue with the vin tag rivets and the round "ghost" around the rosette rivet, especially on the left side? looks to maybe had home depot round rivets before the rosettes......(??)

                Stan..

Good catch. Also notice the shiny area around the rivet, indicative that rivet spun when it was removed. Photo on left is from a known original car, on the right enlarged photo of the car in question

And how does that much rust appear on the frame bar without any discoloration of the tag - looks almost new? Mine's been garaged 38+ years and does not look that good.

the tag has been taken off and +/- cleaned up, the birdcage blasted and repainted
