    Standard Deduct for Tires

Crunching some numbers on my quest for a 97 raw score at the 2014 Kissimmee Regional. If Ican get a 97 raw, I will try to have the car judged again at the National Convention next year for a Duntov Award.

History: Kissimmee Regional Top Flight in 2011 93.7 raw score plus driving points. I know driving points wont make a difference in the 97 raw, but driving it again for judging. 2012 Passed Regional PV at Kissimmee.

I have been working on the car cleaning things up for the past year or so, but drive it regularly and dont really consider it a restored car. Besides paint, chrome and carpets, its a survivor.

I now have repro Firestone Wide Oval Bias Ply tires with DOT markings. What will my standard deduction be?

not sure what it actually is -
but I know for sure you will get hammered pretty badly with those Firestones.

Only tires that even come close are the GoodYears. I think they might loose a couple points per tire (not 100% sure).

But, the young whippersnapper won't be bored to death while he's adding up the deducts:-))

C3 General - NCRS Regional Flight judging round two - I decided to register my 69 again today for a second round of flight judging at the Kissimmee regional in January. I top flighted my car there 2 years ago. I spent alot of time working out the kinks in my operations checklist and last year I signed up for a...

        Gary,
Now that Mark has posted a link to your thread on CF we all know the year of your car. That is important to answer your original question. We all also now know what kind of Firestore tires you have (original or repop) thanks to your post over there. My point is you didn't give us enough information on this forum to base any decision on. I expect many people, like me, read your post and moved on because there was not enough data to respond.

To further disappoint you the rules for Standard Deductions for tires are about a page long -- single spaced. I am not about to keyboard all that into this post, so all I can do is tell you where to find the Standard Deductions. The NCRS Judging Reference Manual (8th edition is the most recent) has those in it and is available from the NCRS Store by clicking the radio buttons at the top of the page. With that book in hand you can determine what your tire (and other) deductions will be. This is the same book the judges will use in Kissimmee.

Any answer given here will be tentative because none of us can see the tires or know the age of your car -- yes, even the VIN #/build date could be a factor. So you are best off trying to figure this out for yourself with the TIM&JG and Judging Reference Manual in hand. After doing that you will be in a better position to follow the judge's logic when they respond to your question: "Why did you deduct X points for my tires?"

        See you in Kissimmee.
        Terry

Sorry, I checked off 68 69 in the title section. I do have the TIM.

          I dont know if this is a 10%, 20% or 30 % deduct.

            Gary,

You need the 8th edition of the judging reference manual in addition to the TIM&JG. This will answer most of your questions. Now, to repeat what Bill said. You will get hammered on the Firestones. They aren't even close. Tread pattern is wrong among other things. Too many people have made the mistake of buying the Coker repros instead of spending the same amount of money on the Goodyear's sold by Kelsey, that are actually made by Goodyear using their original molds, in Akron, OH. From tribal knowledge, with the Goodyears you will get about 10% or so, withe the Firestones you are looking at a bunch more, with or without the DOT on the tire. Good luck. On your quest.

That is true now I think, but I have a few sets of Kelsey's Goodyears from a few years back that are branded as "Made in Argentina".

Sorry Gary, I guess I wasn't paying enough attention, but I am pretty sure it can make a difference if the car is a 1968 or a 1969.

Most of the Goodyear tires I have seen were made at a Kelly Springfield plant in Tyler Texas.

Don't pay any attention the the Crazy Cannuck or Ralph Kramden, er Bus Driver. They always be trying to stir something up.

Some here do not have a sense of humor and I'm sorry, life it too danged short to be serious all the time. You can look at me and tell me I am growing old (hopefully older too), but I damn well refuse to grow up.
