    Hot slot nightmare

Since my carburetor was off for repairs, I thought I'd finally get around to plugging the hot slot on my 66 300HP 327 as many have suggested.

I placed the steel cup plug (.44 diameter) in the hole for a test fit. looked OK. As I tried to remove it I tipped it sideways and it disappeared down the hot slot hole. Can't even see it.
I went to Harbor Freight for an assortment of magnets but none would do the trick. I need a flexible shaft magnet about 1/4" diameter. The one I have is about 1/2' diameter Anyone know a retailer that might sell one?

Anybody got any tricks of the trade here? Otherwise my simple hot slot project is turning into a R&R intake manifold job. Hopefully the exhaust valve is closed or this will be a long project.

You might try making one out of pipe cleaners and taping a small magnet to the end?

Good idea, I've lost C1 hinge pillar bolts, typically the last one I'm installing up high, down into the lower pillar hinge mount valley of death. You cannot get anything down there when that happens. I use a coat hanger and tape a small magnet to fish it around the area. I even lost a socket down there once, even worse to get out. Only other option is to remove the hinges/door again.

Or, I've done this Rube Goldberg trick before too........
using your(clean, emptied) shop vac, make up an adapter to attach a piece of thin-wall to 1/2" clear vinyl tubing. Make the tubing long enough so you'll see the object as it passes by heading to the vacuum source. Sometimes it'll stay stuck at the end of the tubing.

Good Luck, Say a prayer to St Joseph prior to power up of the vacuum. I lost a small piece of hardware on a top tank radiator install a few weeks ago. Thought it went down one of two dual fours. About an hour later St Joe came through, but he answered me via the wifey cuz she found it! It landed on top of the frame stuck between a brake line.

I have a telescopic magnetic pick up tool that looks like a pen. The magnet/ holder measures .300 dia. I bought it many years ago and don't know what brand it is but K-D tools sells something similar ( part #2593 ). Check your local auto parts store that sells K-D tools. It's also available here and shows a picture of the tool: http://www.amazon.com/2593-Telescopi.../dp/B0002SQYDC or http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...k_up_tool.html

          Randy,

Had the same thing happen on my 67 300hp manifold, I tried like you to find a small magnet and then became afraid I would loose the magnet down there because the passage goes straight then bends into no mans land.

I resolved myself that the manifold would have to be removed and found the plug sitting on top of (I think) #3 exhaust valve. I still could not see it but my magnet produced the plug in short order, I was happy just to find it. Having the manifold off I removed the heat shield and noticed approx. 1/4 to 3/8" thick dried caked oil residue. I took the intake to the machine shop and had it shot peened and all the threaded holes tapped and cleaned, it looked like new.

I then tapped the hot slot holes for a allen pipe plug so that would never happen again, I think the size is 3/8"pipe thread and took my time putting the engine back together cleaning/painting little things. Bottom line, I am glad all that caked oil residue is cleaned out and I think the plenum gets hotter which helps the fuel vaporize, the engine runs very nice.

I know it's not what you want to hear and I feel your pain.

            Tim -

Those holes are tapped 1/4" NPT for the Allen plugs.

              Tim,
So I am not the only unlucky one. I was able to get it out without removing the manifold but like you was planning on detailing the manifold if I had to remove it. I lost sleep last night thinking it could have rolled into the cylinder if the exhaust valve was full open.
I used a combination of 1/4" vacuum line taped to my 6 HP shop vac and a small diameter flex magnet that I bought at Sears this morning.

About 10 minutes of fishing down the "rabbit hole" and it appeared. Had to get a strong magnet to pull it thru the carbon in the hot slot.

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions

Randy, I am glad you got the plug out, you can also tap the holes and use vacuum cleaner to get shavings out in case you ever decide to remove the plugs and use the heat. If you decide to tap just go deep enough to where the plugs get tight at the bottom of the slot like in my pics, that thread is tapered.

John, I Thanks for correcting me on the pipe plug size, I always get these things confused in my head.
