    63-64 Throttle Lever Ground Strap

What exactly is the difference between a 63 throttle lever ground strap and one for a 64?

Supposedly, the 63 appears to be wider/fatter than the 64? Could this be because some examples were not stretched as much as others or is there actually a difference in the construction? (strand count) Does anyone have good examples of a 63 and a 64-67 that we can compare?

The part number for the strap did not change for all of 63-67.

Does anyone think that the throttle lever ground strap is supposed to have a star/shake proof washer under the screw where it attaches to the throttle lever? None shown in the 63 or 64 AIM's. None on my 63's.

No, I don't think there was factory installed star washer under the throttle lever screw for the ground strap. Bob

Michael, my 64 FI did not have a star washer, nor any marks that it ever had one on the throttle lever.

        Michael,
Here is a picture of a 1963 original lever with the original fastener holding the original ground strap to it.
As mentioned in the earlier posts, no star washer.

          Michael -

The star washer is a figment of someone's imagination.

Re: 63-64 Throttle Lever Ground Strap

Ok, so there definitely was no star washer originally used under the screw for the throttle lever ground strap for at least 63-64. I looked in the 63 AIM and there's no mention of a washer, for that location.

I see a star washer in this location on several restored cars and wondered where this incorrect information is coming from?? Is it the reproduction parts vendors that have it wrong?

I think a star washer was used for the ground strap in locations that would be attached to painted surfaces, such as the frame. Indeed, the washer is shown/listed for this location.

What about the strap? Is there any way we can figure out if the 63 strap was much different than the 64-67 strap? Is there any way to count the ribs of weave?? I tried to count the rows in Monte's picture but it's just too small to get an accurate count.

Michael, looking at Fred Olivia’s AIM database, the same ground strap (2981858) was used on ’63 to ’67 Corvettes with either the U65 or U69 radio. The Judging Guide is wrong, as we pointed out in Bob Young’s committee, but that was ignored and the language from the 5th edition was simply carried over to the 6th. It’s also interesting that a picture from the AIM is included that clearly shows no star washer.

Since we are on this subject, my original 1964 throttle ground strap bolt without the star washer was called as NTFP at the North Central Regional meet in 2012 as being too long. Can some one tell what the correct length bolt is that you have since mine was the original bolt that was removed with the reminents of the original ground strap without a star washer to be found back in 1979 when I bought the car from the second owner.

                God this is getting old.

                Thanks,

                  Fred Olivia created this database?????

Re: 63-64 Throttle Lever Ground Strap

To answer James West’s question: As shown in Monte’s picture above, the bolt is listed as Indented Head, 1/4-20 1/2” long, cad. Tapping screw.
To answer Donald’s question: Yes, back in the mid 90’s Fred Oliva created and sold a database of all the Chevrolet AIMs from 1963 to 1967. He called it an Interchange Manual and you can search by part number and it will list all the ’63-’67 Chevrolet vehicles that had used that part number.

                      James,

I don't have an original screw handy but I'm pretty sure that all of the screws for ground straps on at least 63-65 radio equipped cars was the same part number. I don't have an AIM handy to check but I'm sure someone can look at theirs.

There were two similar screws used on at least 63-65 cars. One design was for the radio ground straps. It is as described above with self tapping thread. There are four grind out areas on the leading 3 or 4 threads that make it self tapping.

The other similar screw was almost identical but there was only one grind out on the leading threads. That screw (9411890, if I remember correctly) was used to attach the heater hose clamp to the exhaust manifold mounted alternator bracket.

I don't remember the length of either screw.

I think straps at the exhaust pipe center connection at the transmission area would have the exact same screw attaching the strap to the frame. If someone happens to have one off the car, we can get exact specs.

Isn't the head marking "E" for both of the screws I mentioned above?

Using Fred Oliva’s Interchange Manual, that bolt was used on Corvettes from ’63 to ’66 in a number of places. For the ’63 it’s shown in:
