Probably because he knew that the 6-digit number (8xxxxx) in the upper right hand corner of all original stickers, and (cleverly ?) cut off in the eBay photo, would have shown this car to be not entirely as described ?- Top

Re: L72-M22;1966 Corvette on E-Bay!
Could someone please enlighten me on the engine code suffix "IK"; supposedly for a 1966 Corvette 427, 425 hp, special cam, mechanical lifters (the same as the "IP" code) except that it was destined to have an M22 bolted to the bellhousing, rather than the M21.
But this trans-to-block operation was performed at St. Louis, so how did Tonawanda know that this specific engine was destined to be mated to a rock crusher, and what parts would be different than that for the "IP" suffix powerplant ?
The only thing I can think of is maybe the "IK" used a 10" clutch/bellhousing rather than the 11" for the "IP".- Top

I always wondered if the IK suffix was to be used for the never released L88 engine for early 66 production. It would have had a 10" clutch/flywheel and different clutch housing.Last edited by Michael H.; October 12, 2013, 06:07 PM.- Top

Research I've seen shows the "IK" suffix assigned to the L88/M22 combination for 1966, with Tonawanda records showing ZERO produced. I think Al Grenning is going to touch on this at our Regional Judging Seminar at Pro Team on November 9th.- Top

Re: L72-M22;1966 Corvette on E-Bay!
The Penske Sunoco 1966 coupe race car had a lot of documentation as an M22 L88 prototype. Did it have a regular IP code or something else?- Top

Re: L72-M22;1966 Corvette on E-Bay!
I do have more questions though.
Even if it was supposed to be a L72 with a smaller diameter clutch/flywheel etc., and a different engine stamp pad code, something is still wrong.
The sheet that the seller posted shows L72AA. That can't be right. If an L72 with small clutch/flywheel is shown as L72AA with AA as the exception control letters, then a standard L72 would have to be something other than AA, such as L72AB, or ?? That's because the engines would be different than a standard L72 as delivered to the St Louis assy plant.
Possible? No, because I have an original car shipper for another 66 425 HP L72 that shows the same L72AA code.
Either way, L72 with small diameter flywheel/clutch, or L88, it would not have the same ECL as a regular 425 HP/L72.
And.... if it was a real L88 engine option, (which it's not) it certainly wouldn't have been shown on the sheet as costing $312.
I've still not seen any documentation that clearly shows that ANY L88 cars were produced for the 66 model year.- Top

Thanks John. That's what I assumed.
