I am looking for a 3817173 balancer for my 65 L76 engine. My engine build code is MAY 3, 1965. What dates would be judged correct for the date code on the balancer? How many months prior to May '65 would be considered correct?

Re: Date code for 3817173
* In a few cases there are specific items that the TIM&JG specifies that can be different that the above general rule. Since I am not familiar with mid-years I cannot cite you any examples, nor do I know if the vibration damper would be an exception. Someone with more technical knowledge of mid-years, or a copy of the relevant judging manual, may provide specific information for your situation.Terry- Top

Damper is shipped on the engine so would have to predate the engine build...Bill Clupper #618- Top

FWIW, I don't think the date stamp on a 7173 balancer hub is visible with the pulley installed; it would be if it was on the inertia ring.

That is also my recollection, the fin side on my early '65 L76 (lightly stamped 64H [or is it H64; I forget]. Tried to turn the engine over to verify but too difficult to see without a lift.- Top

See photo below of a 7173 balancer with the date stamp on the forward side of the hub.

How close are the ones that Paragon sells? Think I might need one too, the rubber going bad on a used part that's nearly 50 years old concerns me.
This one on EBay does have a date on the inertia ring. But it's on the back side. It looks like it's stamped not part of the casting.

There are two outfits in Redding, California that rebuild them, well and correctly (Damper Dudes and Damper Doctor).- Top

Thanks John! It looks like they put a sleeve on the sealing surface too. That's probably just as important too.

If you click a second time on the image after clicking on the thumbnail and look closely, you'll see the date stamp at about 11 o'clock on the hub (the board software reduced the image from 98KB to 38KB when I uploaded it).- Top

Dunno - photo below is the back side of the same balancer, and I don't see any stamp on it anywhere.

Re: Date code for 3817173
I think you're right. The "CS" is not a stamped date. The CS is part of the original casting.
Scans below show a close up of the cast in CS in one and the G64 date stamp on the other. (date hard to see on far right side)Last edited by Michael H.; October 13, 2013, 06:48 PM.- Top
