Has anyone been successful in repairing scratches on original glass. I have some vertical scratches on the side windows, some deep enough to catch a fingernail

Re: glass scratches
Any buffing heavy enough to repair those scratches will result in distortion when looking though itDick Whittington- Top

Re: glass scratches
I did it. Yes there is distortion, but you can only see it if you specifically look for it. It takes a lot of time and patience, and working a couple of hours a day it took weeks for each window. I tried doing the side glass in place, but it is far easier, and less potential damage to the car, to remove those. Of course windshield can/should be done in place. We have beaten this horse to death in several threads in the past. Those threads even contain where to get the supplies and tools. Eastwood is not the only game in town -- just the most publicized.
Here is just one example of what the search feature will get you. The search terms I used are highlighted. If you don't have the patience for a good search I doubt you will have the patience for this task.

Re: glass scratches
I would really like to keep the glass ...it is all original...the windshield is pristine, except for some mild delamination in the upper corners...which I suspect may indicate water entering the frame in those areas...although no rust can be seen.
The back glass has vertical scratches that are a cm or two high across the bottom... Probably from scraping when it was taken in and out.
The side glass has the most damage from the rattle bumpers being worn down and scratching as the window went up and down.. That has been fixed.
This wasn't a project I had planned on doing myself. I was going to have a pro do it. Went by one of the local glass shops, and they didn't seem too excited about it. :\
So then I checked out Google, and there are some places that claim to be able to fix deep scratches, was wondering if any one had gone that route.
The other issue is the date codes and can they be rubbed off?
For those that decided to replace your glass, what drove your decision to replace vs keeping the original?- Top

Roger, check out this thread in which a member claims to have done so and shows pictures which seem to show amazing results. I can't vouch for it myself and have never seen the results in person.

Re: glass scratches
Thanks Pat,
That is a very encouraging thread and gives hope that this old glass can be restored. Looks like it is very labor intensive and requires a skill set that is developed over time. I don't think it is something I would be comfortable taking on...would probably put 20 hours into it, end up with a mess, and have to buy new glass anyway. i'd like to find a pro that does this kind of work! Especially in the DFW area
