Did GM use a XX or XD engine code. I looking at 1967 327 350hp ? motor for sale. The owner notes that the numbers are V0419XXD (8 numbers?) casting#3892657. Something wrong. I have asked him to check the Cam & Crank Numbers. Can you help. DANO

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
HD was the code for a 1967 327/350.
As far as I can tell, the only 327 engines that used an "X" in the code were,
RX - 1964 327/375 FI
XE - 1963 327 universal service
YX - 1967 327/220
Casting - 3892657, 1966-67, 327, 210-350hp, 2 bolt, Passenger/Chevelle/Corvette/CamaroLast edited by Mike F.; October 3, 2013, 07:21 AM.- Top

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
I found both and XD and XX codes but they're 350 cu. in. engines from light trucks built in '69.- Top

[QUOTE=Daniel OKeefe (53438);679313]Did GM use a XX or XD engine code.
Yes they did for the 1967 model year. There was an XD suffix listed in the 1967 Passenger Car and Truck Identification Information Service Bulletin of April 1967. I do not see an XX code.
XD denotes a 366 cubic inch 350hp with Allison Automatic trans in truck model TE60. This is a big block engine used in light trucks and school buses.

Is the D part of the 8 numbers you have omitted? As always more complete information would help reduce the "guessing". What is the casting date and what are the 8 numbers and again is the D part of those 8 numbers. Pictures could be helpful.
Also sorry to say you may want to proof read your post as it reads like broken English which makes your question and the factual information you present a little cloudy.- Top

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
The 3892657 blocks were used on late 1966 and 1967 models, nothing else as far as I know. The "V0419XXD" stamping is dated April 19th (in the year 1967) at the Flint plant. The "XXD" might be a truck (or boat) code because it does not appear in any of my vintage Chevrolet parts catalogs. The 3-digit letter code is not common on 1968 and older blocks but they do exist.
I have a 3858180 block stamped "T0521HAR" (Tonowanda, May 21st, 327 w/M.T., Rochester carb.) with a casting date of "E136" or maybe "E186". I have also seen engine stampings with a 3rd letter "H" (for Holley carb.) on 1966 & 1967 327 Chev. truck engines.

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
I think the suffix code is being reported incorrectly. Three alpha character suffix codes did not begin until about the 1970 model year. I don't think the "X-prefix suffix three character codes came along until much later and I think they were used mostly, if not exclusively, for SERVICE engine assemblies. I can't see one of these having a 3892657 casting number. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
In general you are correct. However, I have a 1966 Chevrolet 327 engine (casting 3858180) stamped "T0521HAR" ("R" = Rochester carb.). In years past in the salvage yards I have also seen 1966 & 1967 Chev. truck 327 blocks with a 3-digit suffix ending with the letter "H" (Holley carb.).

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
66 was the year for the carb code added as the third character. That did not repeat in 67.
I suspect the XXD was a service or parts engine suffix. So far, I don't have any real documentation, but in my research on CE engines, I came across quite a few examples of XXC and XXD stamped on the assemby pad below the CE number in some cases and after the CE number in some cases. I have also seen a number of truck 348 and 409 blocks with the XXX or XX? stamp which reinforces my belief that it was some sort of service code for service engines or even possibly commercial/industrial engines which had their own different alpha numeric suffix codes. I have been trying to locate an example of Chevrolet industrial/Marine/agricultural parts catalog for years. They must be out there somewhere.- Top

Re: 327 "XD" engine code.
Thanks Jerry, but I'm not really doing any official "survey", just general curiousity about the nature of the CE/replacement engine history and how it all worked. It all started with a CE 327 Chevy II block in my 67 327 4 spd Nova. I had never seen or heard of the casting number before so I started looking into it.- Top
