58 frame is back from being dipped, advice on powder coat finish, semi or satin.

I know it's not correct to powder coat but thats the route I've chose to go. What finish is the most correct? i have ruled out gloss so my options are semi-gloss and satin from what the guy doing it told me. Are there some parts I need done in say gloss like the a-arms etc? i know on c2's they're gloss.

    any help appreciated. thanks!

Brandon, when I painted my frames with real tar based chassis paint, they came out quite glossy. They did take on a more semi gloss look after much use. I'd go with something just under a gloss finish to replicate the old style finish closely.

      Brandon,
My suggestion put what ever gloss or sheen you prefer. The judges will deduct 20% for incorrect non paint appearing finish. This is along the guide lines of CDCIF.

What is considered more glossy? semi gloss or satin? and which should be closer to an original sheen? Don't really have much to go on need to decide soon taking it late tomorrow.

            Brandon,
Semi gloss is going to be more glossy than a satin finish.

I think you're better off spraying your frame with a black satin POR 15. It's very durable but has a better appearance than powder coating. JMO. Good luck.

I agree with Tony. POR15 looks very good and is a very, very tough coating. You are going to have to have a very large oven to powder coat.

There are many restorers the PC frames - I have never seen a deduction.
IMO - PC the frame satin

If you go the spray route - DuPont black with 50% flattener
IMO - I dont like POR products......

FWIW: On all my cars most of the Black components where Powder Painted 60% Gloss. It is inbetween gloss and satin according to my powder

                      Brandon,

I had my frame powder-coated semi-gloss and never got a deduction. (Oops, hope they don't do that retroactively!) Most people will do what best protects the investment regardless of a few points. As to gloss, the glossier the paint, the more the imperfections stand out like a sore thumb. If your frame is as smooth as the proverbial baby's butt, then uber gloss may work. With pitting, you probably want to back off some.

thanks for all the advice guys. Dropped the frame off and told them to go satin with it. I had the frame hot dipped in 4 vats one to heat the grease etc up and melt it off then 3 others one I know was an acid then dipped to coat it to keep it from rusting until it got powder coated. So, the frame hopefully will be preserved as best possible when done! I also had them sand blast the frame after dipping it as the powder coater said it sticks better to a blasted frame so the frame looked as clean as I've ever seen one. Thanks again!

                          brandon,
You did it right and saved time & $$. I had 2 frames done and the powdercoating even made it to the insides in all the places you can see.
Painting is expensive, hard work, handling, not to mention the missed spots (siems) and over spray.
Spray painting works but it's not easy to handle a frame and keep the paint even.
