    72 wiper mechanism

I am seeking some advice/help -- I have loosely mounted my wiper mechanism and I have encountered two situations.
#1 -- The rod (curved) that operates the right side transmission arm droops down do to gravity allowing rod interference with the floor of the wiper bay.
#2 -- The left side rod when positioning the wiper to its outer most position places the rod and transmission arm at full extension with each other thus causing a bind btx the transmission arm,
the rod and the drive motor crank.
Any ideas as to how to correct these malfunctions ?????
Thanks for any help provided !

    Rey,
First I think I would snug the wiper mechanisms to the cowl. Remove any possible play you might not be seeing.
Then, I am assuming you have already taken all the end play out of the rods by adjusting the the adjustments by the ball?

Next, are you dealing all the parts that came off this car or are some new to this car at this point?
The reason I ask is: for example if you are putting in a different wiper motor are you absolutely sure it has the right rotating bracket bolted to it?

If you could post a few pictures of the exact situation you are dealing with, it might help a bit. I have the wiper grate off one of my cars right now. Maybe looking at your and comparing it to mine might spark and idea or suggestion.

If you have trouble posting pictures you can send them direct to mbusiness@comcast.net.

My little 1972 LS-5, 454 has a little cubic inch envy over that 502. lol

      Re: 72 wiper mechanism

I have cured my problems with the wiper mechanism on my car. That's the good news. The not so good news is how I cured my ails with my wipers. I discovered it quite by accident and a couple of cold ones. The cure is/was that the arm that bolts to the motor shaft has to be installed properly! If not it has the effect of making arm longer which sorta make each rod reach out farther at the ends of the wiper strokes. This is what caused the left side binding that I was experiencing and the interference of the right side rod with the floor of the wiper bay.Take the arm off the motor, reverse it = problem solved.
The cause results from the motor shaft is in fact eccentric as it rotates. Mount the arm wrong and it lengthens the stoke putting the rods and transmissions beyond there designed stroke limitations so if you take it apart be sure to note which way the motor arm comes off and put it back with the same orientation as it was removed.
I looked all through the AIM and found no mention of this at all.
I am sure many members are a wear of this but for those that are not this is a good reminder.

        Rey,

Somehow in the dark of last night I thought you had a 1970, so I brought to work & scanned the sheets from that AIM. I am sure the same sheets are in the 1972 AIM -- which I highly recommend you purchase.

Edit Add: The work computer will not let me upload the PDF images of these two AIM pages. I will send them to you via email, and try to post them from home later tonight.

On UPC 1, Sheet D6 note the square in about the center of the drawing. The one with the diagonal change of colors. That symbol means "supplied by others." And the word "trans" beside it would indicate to me that the transmission (what the wiper linkage is called) is supplied by others. That means it came to St Louis as an assembly, and it looks like that assembly contained the bell crank you speak of.

Sheet D8 (which says to use with sheet D6) is the instructions for installing and adjusting the transmission linkage.

I will repeat what I said to you in an email. You need a reference library to support your Corvette. The entry level books (available from the NCRS Store from the button at the top of the page) are:
The Chevrolet Chassis Service and Overhaul Manuals
        The Assembly Instruction Manual
The NCRS Technical Service Manual and Judging Guide
Each of these is available for the specific year car you own.
        Terry

I will see how these PDFs post from home. And the short answer is that they don't. Oh well you don't have the need to know, I guess.
