    Mid year upper shock washers

Does anyone know who provides the correct mushroom /thick upper shock washers?

    Dave,

When I purchased mine a couple of years ago, they were available through GM. I got mine at the local dealer.

Do you always have to replace washers and other hardware when replacing C2 shocks or can you reuse ones you remove when changing shocks?

As mentioned, the washer may still be available from GM.

Up until at least the early 80's, the washers came through the correct original light grey color. At some point, the plating changed to a dark grey.

No longer available from GM. Discontinued about 18 months ago. Very recently, I saw an advertisement somewhere that some outfit that sells mainly reproductions of various parts was selling NOS examples of these for 15 bucks. I just don't recall where I saw it or what the company name was.

Hardware can be re-used if it's in good condition.

It depends upon what year C2 you're talking about. 1963-64 used different front upper shock washers than 65-67.

The 63-64 upper shock washers are hard to find in the exact configuration Dave. The 65-67 are readily available in the fleas and elsewhere. John

The retainers available today from GM under GM #25628204 are very similar to the originals. Perhaps not exactly the same, but it would take a pretty "trained eye" to discern the difference.

The washers pictured appear to fit the 65-82. I know cause Bill Clupper made me aware of the difference as the 65-82 are rather large/thick mushroom type that are a black phosphate like finish. 63-64 judging manual says" thin cadmium or zinc plated washer and a hex nut.

Dave - a 63 now you're really in trouble! (only kidding, but may hat's off to those with the 63's)
The same retainer for shock, AIM 3-4.00, was used for sway bar, AIM 3-5.00, part number 5544049 with a change on 5-3-63 from 043468.
The 5544049 was also used on the 1964 and typically is much smaller than the one shown above and may even have a slight gold tone to it.
So take a look at the sway bar retainers the repo guys have.

These are the pictures of the 1963 shock washers I have. I couldn't tell you the difference between the second design and the GM 25628204 pictured.

It was also discussed some time ago that the retaining nut is different and the service replacement is a rod nut (engine) as it does not have the washer lip on the nut. This makes sense since the hex portion of the nut needs to be flat inside the hex cut out of the washer.

Timothy, the picture you have of first type (until 5-63) doesn't look like the NOS ones I have. My first type have the hex on the inside like your second type ones. Bob
