Shift lock cable from transmission to steering column

Working on a 1971 CV base 350 w/automatic, numbers matching engine & transmission. Ordered a new shifter lock cable, P/N 53309, from one of the major aftermarket parts suppliers. Made sure the part was for an earlier C3 car w/automatic. However, when I installed the part, connected it to the transmission first, then ran the other end through the steering column retaining bracket and tried to connect the cable to the pin on the shift lever, the cable is about 1/2" longer than needed. No adjustment on the cable. Any ideas as to what I can do to make it work? Anybody run into this before? Appreciate any response with help.

I've had 46 people view this thread and no responses. What happen to all the Corvette people? I hope they didn't become the walking dead?

I am one of the 46 you mention. I did not respond to your first post because once I opened it, I saw that it was about an automatic. Unfortunately, my experience is limited to 4 speed.

It might help if you talked more about what you have. Are you replacing an existing cable or was there no cable with the car when you got it? If one was with the car, how does the length of the new one compare to the old one? How long is the new one? Sharing some of this detail might help you get the help you need.

If nothing else, I hope I've helped you keep your thread near the top where it'll get morning attention.

I am traveling and away from my parts book. I believe the Parts Book Illustration pages note the length of the cable. That would be a place to start.

          Barry,

I replaced the cable on my 4-speed 1972 in 1982. I recall it being a PITA; though now, I'd probably rate it as less so.

Attached is a photo of the 1972 service manual page that calls out the adjustment made by two nuts under the steering column. This procedure is in the 4-speed section of the book; I couldn't find a corresponding adjustment in the TH400 section. Regardless, I'm willing to bet you'll find the same two nuts on yours. Good luck!Back drive.jpg

Now that it's posted, I can see the pages aren't all that legible. Give me a few minutes to re-shoot and re-post.

And lastly, in the GM parts catalog dated December 1983, Gr. 4.070, the cable for TH400 cars was listed as # 3949075, 21-1/8" long.

That number may long ago have been superceded, discontinued, etc.

Loosen the two bolts on the plate and rotate the plate to hook up cable and also make adjustments for key release the same way. You can not have the wrong cable as the two cables ( automatic and 4 speed) are about one foot different in length.

Hey folks. Thanks for the responses. Just got a chance to get on the computer and review responses. I was working on the car today and realize that there is adjustment on the bracket that the steering column bolts to on the fire wall. Made the adjustment, problem fixed. I appreciate every ones help. Thanks
