Is there a good on line source to look up GM part numbers in order to get a description of a part, especially for fasteners? Thanks for your help!

Re: Part Number/Part Description Search
Bob,
I do not usually use the web to find the description of GM parts and fasteners as I have many vintage Chevrolet parts catalogs (about 55 different catalogs ranging from 1963 to 1982). However, if you Google a GM part number you might find a scanned page of a GM parts catalog or GM Parts History manual. Someone has scanned various GM parts catalogs and they are available on line.
The fasteners are located in the STANDARD PARTS SECTION of the Chevrolet parts catalogs in Groups 8.899 to 8.984.

Re: Part Number/Part Description Search
I use Don Olson's fantastic AIM Database. I first find the part in the AIM then search his database for every place that part is used on the car. In the example below it's used 8 places and a total of 24 are used throughout the car. I then can go paragoncorvette.com, they have a lot of their parts searchable by GM part Number, so if they don't show the part for your application often times one might find same fastener for another application. In the example below I searched for a 3846202 screw assembly at Paragon they did have it listed by GM part number along with the nut as kit.
Don's database also shows the torque values for the application which also comes in really handy.

Re: Part Number/Part Description Search
The fasteners furnished through GM parts were not necessarily the same as used on the assembly line. You will find that Richard Fortier, who advertises in the Driveline, is a very good resource when hunting correct fasteners. It is hit or miss with most of the other vendors with some having more correct items for a range of model years than others doDick Whittington- Top

Re: Part Number/Part Description Search
Robert,
P&A 24 is the GM Fastener Parts Book. P&A 24 started about 1970. Prior to that fasteners were listed in the P&A 30 parts books in Section 8.9 Fasteners are listed in the various P&A sections. There's not a concise list of fasteners used by year other than what's in the AIMs.
