    Re: 74 rear gears

Todd, you have enough torque to pull anywhere in that area, even through Loveland and the Divide. My parents lived east of Denver and we used to take their Corvette to Vail, Aspen, Red Feather, Purgatory, etc. with no problem. It is an L-48, TH 350 with 3.08's. Steve

Absolutely yes. A 2.73 would be okay. The 454 has massive torque which means it has big power in the normal operating range of off idle to 4000, which is where you spend 99+ percent or your driving time. Engines are not one dimensional, and peak power is really only important in racing. Available power in the normal road speed operating range is way more important, and on the freeway at high speed a 3.08 is very nice and will easily pull up to the Eisenhower Tunnel in fourth with plenty of power to spare.

You also have tuning options to improve fuel economy and torque/power across the rev range, which is explained in my San Diego presentation, the link to which has been posted here many times.

        UPDATE

I am having the rear rebuilt by Yogi Bair's in PA. I was called and informed my gears are indeed 3:36. I will keep them.
I was also told my diff carrier yokes need replaced.
Last but not least, someone was previously into the diff and replaced the cover with one from a 63-64 cover. There were several tell tale indicators; the drain plug was larger, and something about the weep hole.
My diff will be finished by the end of next week. I am going to try and find a cover for a 74 before now and then; or should I keep the one with it now?

        Thanks guys

        Todd

I would replace the cover with the 65-76 style cover. These are not rare and good used examples are pretty easy to find. Of course, if you want a date-correct cover, that might be a bit harder to find. For me, though, just the correct cover would be the important thing, not the date.
