    1966 Side Pipe question

I'm going to look at a 66 with side pipes that I may purchase. It is a St. Louis body. Did all the cars have the rocker support brackets welded to the birdcage and then cut to install the side pipes? Or, if the car had original side pipes, should I see no remains of any brackets?

    Thanks,

    Don

Don, that is one of the first things you check. Also check the cut-outs for the U-nuts to ensure they are clean cuts, the body tabs that are cut off for the side pipes are cut in a certain way. Also, on a non-sidepipe car there is a hole in the cross member to attach a ground strap. If you look at the hole and it is clean with no thread marks, it's an indication it's a side pipe car. If the hole has thread from the self-tapping bolt, then a ground strap was there for a non-sidepipe car.

There are many items to look at. Take pictures and post them here. Take an NCRS chapter member with you that is familiar with side pipe installation.

If your not having your car judged then it doesn't matter, If you are going to have it judged and it is not a side pipe car, then be prepared to take about a 200 point deduction. Points get taken on Exterior, Chassis, Operations and Mechanical as I recall. Why Operations, the sound is not the same as a non-sidepipe car (exhaust noise).
