    After reading this entire thread my bet it was the bad connection on the ignition switch.

    ....but if the gremlin returns, one other thing to check right away is distributor ground. Without a good ground, no sparky. Sometimes pretty paint and a gasket makes for a bad ground.

      Looks like I got my engine shut off problem fixed. No issues after a long cruise yesterday. The more I think about it, I think it was the ignition switch connection.
      Hope those gremlins don't return.
