I've inherited two 1968-69 exhaust extensions/tips and trying to determine if they're NOS or repro as these have never been installed. I've seen typical factory chrome which these portray however do 68-69 extensions have part #'s stamped into them like 63-67?

Re: 68-69 exhaust tips
Michael,
No one (to my knowledge) makes a repro of the original exhaust tips in steel. They are made in stainless. If these are magnetic and heavy then they are either assembly line or service replacement. It is my understanding that assembly line tips have 2 slots and service have 4. I may be wrong here and others will have to chime in but all originals I have seen are this way and all NOS examples I have seen in boxes have the 4. There are no part numbers or labels on them

The original 1968 extensions ("tips") were GM #3921607 and the original 1969 extensions were of GM #3952742. Both were chrome plated steel with no embossed part number of any kind. Both of these had two slits. The 3921607 was discontinued in January, 1970 and replaced by the 3952742. There is a discernible difference between the 3921607 and the 3952742 which relates to the configuration of the reduction section.
In February, 1980 the 3952742 was discontinued from SERVICE and replaced by GM #496346. The latter is an exhaust extension originally used on some Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles which became SERVICE for the 68-69 Corvette application. These are the extensions with 4 slots. They are also otherwise configured slightly different than the original Corvette extensions. The 496346 was finally discontinued without supercession in February, 1993.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
