    WCFB needs help (update)

It has now become a quest to solve my flooding problem. I increased the primary and secondary float adj. by 1/8 " (Pri-9/32, Sec- 13/32) to decrease the level of fuel in their prospective bowls. Started engine , ran smooth until fuel started dribbling out of the secondary. Frustrated I readjusted floats for extremely low bowl fuel levels , finally no fuel coming out of secondary but insuffiecent fuel in primary to keep engine idling. Checked bowl levels, Primary almost nonexistant but Secondary was about 1" below top edge. I re-adj. just the primary float for 9/32 and started engine . Ran fine until fuel started dribbling out of secondary. Fuel level in both bowl extremely high. This problem has been consistantly inconsistant. I'm thinking of checking my fuel pressure next, thinking maybe high pressure is defeating the float system ? Anybody know what a good pressure reading would be ? Got to go to Church, maybe a few prayers will help....Jim.

    Have you weighed the floats?

      James,

I agree with checking the floats, if you place them in boiling water bubbles will appear where there is a hole. Also fuel pressure 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 is normal at idle.

Tim, I'll verify that pressure and will try that boiling float trick...Jim.

            Jim,

Assuming your floats are OK, check to make sure they are properly aligned (parallel to the bowl) and can move up and down freely without getting hung up on the side. A slight misalignment can cause an intermittant flooding problem.

Below is a picture of the original Kent-Moore tool I use. A good metal straight edge can also be used. Make sure each side of each float is evenly spaced. I have had good results sticking with the factory settings even with todays fuels. One other thing, what is the condition of the fuel in the bowl right after you experience flooding?? Next time this happens, remove the air horn from the carb (carefully) so as not to disturb the fuel remaining in the bowl and observe the level and look for contaminants such as A fine brown dust which would indicate rust in the fuel tank finding its way to the carb which can also cause flooding. Good luck, Dan

Dan, I did pay more attention to the alignment of the floats but I did adjust the floats to the Bob Kunz recommended (9/32 for the primary and 13/32 for the secondary. Also, tell me I'm crazy but the needles on the latest rebuild kit (corvette central) seem to have sharper edges on the three sides versus two sets of other needles that I had seemed to be more smooth and rounded, so I used two older style needles that seemed to be fine. I hooked up my pressure guage (really meant for fuel injected pumps) and got areading of 6-8 psi. Low and behold no flooding in the secondary. I went ahead and adj. the idle and mixture for peak rpm and vacuum. I will test drive tomorrow and keep all who gave me advice of any new developments. Thanks Dan and all of the rest of you guys for your invaluable help that you won't fine in any book, only at the school of hard knocks. Thanks again one and all....Jim.

Good luck Jim, if you have another flooding problem, as per my prior post, check the condition of the remaining fuel in the bowl for fine contaminants. D
