    69 exhaust shield attachment

aim.jpg2003k-12_1_.jpgHello, I need to replace the covers and insulators on my 69. They have been replaced in the past, and someone has done a poor job of it. There are four blind nuts on each side, which I assume are attached to the birdcage somehow. Close inspection of these shows damage from the incorrect screws being used, a couple of them have plastic drywall anchors shoved into them, and one or two appear to be missing. Looking at the AIM, it is hard to tell how they are attached to the birdcage. Are they spot welded, or do they fit into a clip, or something else? How are they accessed to be replaced? I've attached a couple of photos, one of the AIM with the blind nuts circled, and one of the part from Paragon which I think is the correct replacement. Thanks

the original inserts were spot welded to the channel.

You have to drive/chisel them out.

The repro ones just slide in from the rear - maybe you should put epoxy so they stay more permanent.
I did the epoxy on my 69 - it worked very well.

Thanks Bill. When you say slide in from the rear, are you talking about behind the strip of fiberglass below the door?

        yes -

there is a metal channel that is part of the birdcage assembly under the fiberglass. It is what the door sill plates are screwed into.
It ties the front and rear sections together.
