There's a fiber washer or gasket that goes in between the fuel inlet fitting and the AFB carburetor body. What color is it? In the carb rebuild kits it's black. When you see them sold separately, they are reddish.

What model AFB are you working with? Most of the kits I've used have had a red/brown fiber gasket. The black ones may be for an Edelbrock version as the kits have become generic for both carb series. There are some minor differences between the fittings over the years. My 3461S actually used a metal gasket and the threaded opening (cavity) in the carb body was sort of countersunk. I tried to reuse the metal one, but it wouldn't seal right. I found a red one that fit better on the fitting and into the opening. If you have had several different models in front of you, you could probably see the differences. They are minor, but still there. Your best bet is to find one that fits the fitting and into the cavity for a good seal. Some of the fittings I've seen don't accept the filter screen either.
