Re: 63 L84 engine with an L79 cam

Elgin has been around for awhile, and I'm not aware they have any quality problems, BUT I recommend Federal Mogul (Sealed Power/Speed Pro) or Dana Corp. (Clevite) for ALL OE REPLACEMENT CAMS, and they are all available.

Many have bought the above recommendation, and there are no reported quality issues. They are manufactured 100 percent to the GM blueprints and available from a wide variety of retail outlets at competitive prices. Why go with anything else?

The Sealed Power VS677 springs are identical to the OE second design SB spring, 3811068, and I recommend this spring for ALL OE rebuilds using OE cams, and they can be had for as little as 20 bucks for a set of 16.

If your only issue is the camshaft I recommend you pick the OE cam you want and buy a F-M or Dana brand. If you go with L-46 cam, you'll need an adjustable timing set so you can advance it four degrees. Sealed Power offers the truck roller chain set with three keyways in the crank sprocket that allows for OE indexing or plus or minus four degrees, and it costs about 25 bucks.

You don't need an expensive Cloyes "True Roller" chain. The only difference is the Cloyes has .25" diameter rollers vs. .20" for the OE truck chain. The larger rollers provide absolutely no benefit with an OE cam and valve springs. "True roller" is just marketing hype. A roller chain is a roller chain.

Cloyes also offers the OE replacement truck chain. In fact they may even manufacture all these chains regardless of what brand OE replacement truck chain you buy, so just buy the OE truck chain with the three slot crank sprocket based on price.
