54 lower trunk lock mechanism worn

Mine is worn out it seems. I dont trust closing the trunk as I might not get it open. Anyone have a good one they would part with??? The lobe is worn and Dote really think something like that is repairable, pot metal. Thanks anyway!!!

Re: 54 lower trunk lock mechinisiam worn

I've got a spare but might need it. I bought it advedrtised as a supposed passenger car part that looked awful close to the Corvette part to me, going by memory. But the Corvette parts book indicates the lock mechanism was a Corvette only part.

While the pot metal part is not repairable you could disassemble the mechanism and make a steel part to replace it. I never could figure out why it was pot metal. Probably cheaper to mold the part than to shape it any other way.

In the meantime you might take the key cylinder out and use a bladed screw driver to unlock it. As I recall the screw driver can turn it farther than the tang on the keyed cylinder can. Sometimes you need that extra bit of rotation to get it to release.

      it is grooved ?
      they can be removed.
try build up of epoxy or another 2k material.

Thanks guys, I might try to seperate the lobe, there is a spot welded flange that holds the lobe into place, the round portion that resides in the flange is more of the issue, that's what holds the lobe in place. Grossmuller didnt have one, Ill just have to wait it out to find a good one. Ill do the screwdriver thing for now. Once again, I appreciate all the help over the years. Body and chassis are together once again and looking nice. Looks weird seeing a body on it.

The lobe is pot and the bracket is steel....weird.
          They dont work the greatest
my only thought would be to try to build up the rounded part.
If you knew a good machinst - I am sure he could machine one out of steel.....

Thanks Chris. Anyone know what the lobe dimension was to begin with, If I have that maybe I can get one machined and make some extras.
