    C1 cove colour question

Hello everyone. I am new to NCRS but not new to the Corvette hobby. I have been involved with Corvettes since 1985 when I bought my first, a 1982 Collector Edition. Over the years I have amassed a lot of reference books and other Corvette literature. I currently own two C6's.

What brings me here is to gain even more knowledge especially where the C1 and C2 generations are concerned.

I recently ran into an individual with a crown sapphire 59 with turquoise top and interior. The car has white coves but the white paint does not go to the wheel openings. He says the factory did this and I disagree. I have seen two red 59's, one red 61, and most recently a silver blue 58 that the cove colour did not go to the wheel opening.

I am trying to obtain a reference as to whether or not the factory did this or perhaps the dealers did this back in the day. I am going to try to attach a picture of the coves on the 58 I just came across. The area on the fender where the crossed flags are is body colour. I think it should be white to be correct.

Any direction and resources you can point me to will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi William

The car in the photo is not correct. Paint was applied up to the fender. Looks like his chrome to the fender is missing

The chrome on the fender side (top and bottom) covers where the two colors meet

Welcome William!!! There is a lot of good, detailed knowledge on this Board. Painting the partial cove, like installing the crossed flags and no FI emblem on '56-'57 or six tail lights on '63-'67, was popular back in the day so much that many think it was factory. You are correct, the factory did the whole cove.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was pretty sure I was correct. The 58 in my first post was your classic "barn find". The car was stashed away to hide it from the guy's wife while a divorce was pending. It was forgotten and nature has taken it's toll. The current owner picked it up for $10K but it will need a frame.

The 59 in question is in this photo. I'm pretty sure I will not convince the owner that his coves are not factory correct. I told him he should take it to an NCRS meet and have it judged. This way he can find out if there's other things he may need to do to bring it back 100%. It's a beautiful car but for me the coves need to be right.

maybe not correct, but it surely looks beautiful!

It is a question that has come up before. Never be too quick to say "never." https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...Color-Question

I am definitely not saying never. I'm just looking for some hard evidence that proves one way or the other. As I stated in the OP, I have seen 2 other 59's (both red) and 1 61 (also red) with the fender area body colour and the coves white.

This was a pretty common "mod" back in the day. The cove trim was removed, the holes filled in, and the cove painted a different color up to the insert area. Looks pretty cool that way.
