    Re: 67 outside mirror confusion

Patrick - To the best of my knowledge the OE '67 Corvette outside rearview mirrors all had the retaining ring for the glass & the '67 TIM&JG 5th Ed indicates that it a detail that should be looked for in judging on p. 79. Pete

The difference from the C3 mirror vs the C2: C3 mirror has to be soaked in lacquer thinner over night to loosen the glue holding the glass in place whereas C2 has a retainer that needs to be removed to get the glass out. Be careful not to lose the springs inside when you remove the glass. I don't know what Terry's article says but what I do to tighten them up is after the glass is removed, find something hard as a backer but soft enough so as not to damage the chrome. Then use a ball pein hammer and tap(fairly hard) the rivet heads that hold the metal strip against the pivot. Continue to tap until the mirror is tight enough. The hard part is finding something soft but hard enough to support the back of the mirror so that when you tap hard on the inside, it doesn't bend the back side. I use a hard piece of plastic that came off of a coats tire changer's bead breaker back stop. (stops that the rim is pressed against as the bead breaker arm pushes on the tire bead from the other side.)

Your mirror can be repaired. Many years ago Terry McManmon had an article published in the Restorer covering repair of just the problem you have. His article was based on early C3 outside mirrors but I believe the same repair procedure would work for a 1967 mirror. I don't recall the edition but I suspect that Terry will.

As has been mentioned, a right side mirror is not original for any 1967 Corvette. No 1967 Corvette ever had a factory-installed right side mirror; any that are found had them dealer or owner installed at some point in the car's life.

By the way, if your mirror glass is at all deteriorated, it can be replaced as part of the mirror repair process. Dated reproduction mirror glass is easily available.
