68 Door Panel Refurb??

IMG_6859.jpgThere has been recent discussion about trying to bring back older original panels and I too am a fan of originality. So I'm thinking of redoing my old Feb original panels (for a Mar car). The CA ones on the car are in nice condition but don't fit as good as the original, gap at top. Question, does this left panel look beyond redemption? Other than this blemish they are in great shape. I have seen the up scale car dealer suggestions for repair but this has some vinyl missing. CA has a re-skin option but I sure would like to stay original, any thoughts? Dale

I had my old door panels re skined years ago from CA and they did a very good job on them. I would do that if the substrate would be in good condition.

image.jpgimage.jpgDale, my 68 door looks a lot like yours" I hope there is a good solution to be had. I'd like to keep my doors also. I was going to re-skin mine unless this can be repaired.
BTW, sine both of our cars are March 68, I am curious if "Rose" did your door? Always neat to find that sort of thing.

My 1968 was built in FEB and bought in MAR. I will have to look for "Rose" next time I have the door panel off.

Pat, If we have to do the re-skin option with CA, they have a new vapor barrier out now that looks like it might work, as it is vacuum formed and has the contours. Dale

It's a Corvette America item Door Panel Vapor Barrier #39945 and they sell the door panel skins for $99.99, #440720 in black. They have a site http://www.corvetteamerica.com.

Talked to Corvette Am and the skins are not what I thought. They cover the old panel. Like reroofing over the old roof. Not good. Back to square one. Off to see if can be repaired.

They take the old skin off and use your substrate with the names and dates on them, unless your substrate is real bad you will not be able to tell they have been re skined I had mine done in the early 80s by CA. Because I wanted to save my dated door panels. And. They came out excellent and 30 plus years later still look great.
