1965 327/350HP Coupe Underdash Questions Firewall Insulation

    Hello everyone,
I put my firewall insulation in this weekend and I had to remove the Brake and Clutch bracket assymbly to put the glue in upper insulation on. I then installed the lower insulation with the black backing and the push in plugs. Then I installed the brake and clutch pedal assymbly and sandwiched the lower insulation between the pedal bracket and the firewall. I did this because the insulation had cutouts in it for the 4 studs to go through and I figured that if it was supposed to go on top of the bracket than there would not be cutouts or there would be a square cut out that the whole bracket would fit though. Then today I found the old lower insulation that I removed remnants of and it looks like it was not mounted between the bracket and the firewall. Does anyone know what was installed first? The lower insulation or the pedal bracket assymbly?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

The pedal assembly goes directly against the firewall. The insulation is installed after the pedals.

I was afraid of that! I'm just wandering why the cutouts for the studs if they don't go through the insulation?
Also is there some way from the AIM to tell the sequence. The pedal bracket is shown in upc 5 way back in the book and the insulation is up in the front.
I had to remove the pedals to install the upper insulation that glues in. So, I assumed that the lower went in then too. They are both on the same page of the AIM. I gues the AIM is grouped more by physical area on the car than by timeline.
Thanks again for the speedy reply. Now I have to decide if I want to start over!

        Hello Jim,
This brings up another question does the cast iron fitting for the emergency brake go on the firewall before the insulation as well?

          That's correct.

            Bill -

The Assembly Manual was an Engineering document, which presented all the parts in the car in the same order as the Engineering Release System (UPC 1 thru 14, followed by RPO's) - it was not a Process document - those were generated by Chevrolet Central Office Production Engineering and locally by the plant and were not published outside of GM.

You might enjoy the attached sequential summary of the midyear assembly process at St. Louis, from the first subassembly operation on the underbody panel in the basement to the shipping gate. Printed, it's 27 pages.

So if im reading this correctly the Firewall upper and lower insulation was applied before the peda assymbly?

Yes, but the firewall end of the pedal support was bottomed-out on the firewall, not on the applied lower insulation.
