Gas tank install on rolling frame

I thought this would be a slam dunk.

Quanta new gas tank and straps. I thought placing the tank in position on the rear x-member and the removable member, then hooking up the straps, bring the straps over the tank and use the bolts at the rear x-member to tighten up. Not so,

The straps appear to be about 1/4 inch short, could not get the bolts lined up. I had to lower the removable x-member, hook up the straps at the front and bolt up the back with only a few threads engaged. At this stage the removable x-member is at a severe angle. Lined everything up , then had to jack up the removable x-member into position then bolt up the x-member.

Somewhat of a pain. Can't imagine doing this with the body on.

The last step was to tighten up the strap bolts. This seemed to tighten up the straps a lot. But I would be afraid to completely loosen up these bolts.

Anyone else encounter this on a c3 --73

I installed a Quanta tank in my 70 (body-on driver) without any problems, car on the ground in the garage. It took about 2 1/2 hours.

IIRC disconnect battery, drain fuel tank, remove exhaust, remove spare tire carrier, remove fuel filler cap, remove fuel filler neck, loosen straps, remove cross member, drop tank......and reverse.

Thanks, the link suggests that the aftermarket straps are stiffer so are harder to place. The other problem that the link says was centering the tank for the filler hole in the body. This is a problem since it is currently a rolling chassis. Guess this means some adjusting to the lateral position of the tank after the body drop. There is no guideance in the AIM for for and aft and lateral tank positions.

In judging the earlier C3s we have seen a lot of side to side variance based on the gas cap in the opening on cars that appear to never have had the tank or body removed. This happens most often on 1972s. I don't know what was going on at St Louis with this, but it is the way it is.

Steve, What you might have is the gas tank where its seamed together at the strap area sometimes needs to be bend up a little to help make room for the straps to wrap around the tank and bolt up correctly. just take a look at your original tank and you'll see exactly what I am talking about. Its maybe at the front and rear areas.
