    speedometer head removal 56

I need to send my speedometer head in for a rebuild. How do I get it out of the dash?

    Dave -

The speedo attaches from the back side of the dash - see your Assembly Manual, UPC 12, sheet 11.00.

It basically requires standing on your head!!! Removal of the driver's seat will greatly facilitate access to the speedo. PLUS, removing the steering wheel will help even more.

Thanks, I was afraid that would be required. Maybe I can convince my grandson to climb under there.

Dave - I recently removed my speedometer on my '57 to get to the windshield wiper transmission. There is a single screw on each side holding it in (good example in the AIM manual as John points out) and to Tom's point, removing the door probably would make the job easier. But I was able to get mine out without too much effort and I didn't remove the door. Just laid on my back with my head under the dash. Getting a socket the correct size of the screw head is important for removing the screws. Putting the speedometer back in took a little patience but I did it in about 10 min. A couple Advil helped get through the back recuperation process that evening.

Tom - you caught me skimming instead of fully reading your reply - you didn't say door removal. Sorry about that. Seat removal probably facilitates the removal process and would be easy to do. In fact, I like the idea and may use it the next time I have to get back under the dash for the next problem that presents itself.
