Cleaning Rubber

I would like to clean up some rubber strips and plastic end caps on my 74's rear bumper. Can someone recommend the best way to do this. The plastic has some paint over-spray on them as well as 30+ years of crud. The rubber strips have what looks like the old adhesive on the back which I would like to clean up as well as normal crud.

Todd take a pic of what needs to cleaned. I know that that 3M makes a adhesive remover safe for paint.The plastic with over spray maybe something you 'll want to be careful. I know that I have seen a guy that removes pin stripes that were painted on with oven cleaner and then compounds the car paint. Maybe try to spray some on a soft towel and wipe a small area.

I always start with very hot water ,dish soap and simple green . for overspray you can use lacquer thinner if the part is unpainted rubber .I always use dupont #3812 and a putty knife to remove the adhesive .

So I made it to the garage. Here is a picture of the plastic end cap for the bumper with the paint overspray on it, and the rubber strip with the double sided tape which goes on the bumper.photo(7).jpgphoto(8).jpg

Todd, you can use a little lacquer thinner on the plastic for the overspray. Put it on the back first to be sure that it won't permanently discolor the piece. You can also use chrome polish or paint polishing compound.
