    63 Front coil spring tags

    I am wondering if any of you 63 guys have a consesus on spring tags?? My reason is my 63 that I restored a couple of years ago had yellow paper tags on them, And now I a 63 in my shop ,untouched front suspension, It appears to be never apart, cotter keys still in tack and all original ball joints.my car is a 327/340 ,as is the car in shop. part no on tag reads 3832518.I know the JM makes no reference to spring tags on 63, but have seen a few base cars with green paper tags coded with letters and part no.s

    Thanks for your input. Ed

        Re: 63 Front coil spring tags

        For the longest time I believed that the F40/41 spring had a green paint swipe and the standard suspension had a purple paint swipe. Also the AC front spring had a yellow tag.

        There was a post in the last 18 months where someone posted a green tag with the correct standard spring number on it.

        So, I never say Never.

          Ed, I believe 2518 front spring is the HD spring used in F40 and F41. Since you could no get F40 in 63 other than in a Z06 I would suspect that the springs have been changed. Just my thoughts!!Joe

            Here's the yellow tag on OTC spring -- this one is for C2 BB w/o C60 or F41. Shipping tag on box shows late 1978.

              I wonder if as Mike says yellow over the counter tags were yellow, Would the yellow tag that has the part no.(332518). be a that part no. that would be purchased over the counter spring. I guess this might be a Joe L. question. As Harry says I recall the yellow tag coming up for discussion before but Don't recall the part no.

                Re: 63 Front coil spring tags

                For at least part of the 63 production year, front coil springs did not have part number tags. Instead, the spring was paint striped on a coil or two, the same way 62 and earlier.

                This method of ID also agrees with the original print for both std and F40 springs for 63. The

                The print for the unique spring for 63 (and early 64) cars with A/C does call for a part number tag instead of a paint stripe.

                I don't know if/when the springs with a tag instead of a paint stripe eventually entered 63 production.

                  The original print for all 63-67 springs includes specific dimensions and colors for production or service springs. The tags are not the same.

                    Mike, I have seen the green paper tags on a few 63 cars. Now another yellow tag has appeared again on another 63 built with in about 500 cars of my Mar. car, both SHP motors. It makes me think, Is it possible??? Mike do you happen to know if that part no. is a production part no. or a over the counter number??

                      Edward,

                      The print is very specific about the differences between spring tags for production and those for service.

                      If my scanner was functioning, I would scan and post that information section of the original print. I suppose I could type it out but.... maybe later.

                        Ed,

                        Here's what is on the original GM print for coil spring part number/code tags. I hope this helps.

                        Production;

                        All coil springs except service must be individually identified by part number (1/4" high) and assembly plant code (1/2" high) on printed tape on any of the three center coils of the spring.

                        Material:
                        Behr Manning #197 or equivalent.
                        Width: 1.00 inch
                        Length: Sufficient to wrap completely around spring bar stock with 1.25" overlap ends, adhesive sides together toward ID of coil spring.
                        Color: Behr Manning #197 green with black printed part number & assembly plant code. Like numbers and letters to be repeated aprox every inch. Colors must match samples retained by engineering dept.
                        Tape source must meet engineering on entire part.

                        Service;

                        All service coil springs must be individually identified by part number with printed tape applied on the center coil of the spring.
                        Tape specification and description.
                        Material: Behr Manning #197 or equivalent.
                        Width: 1.00
                        Length:
                        Sufficient to wrap completely around spring bar stock with 1.00" minimum overlapped ends, adhesive sides together toward ID of coil spring.
                        Color: GM yellow with black GM coil spring part number. Numerals (??) high printed across tape, repeated approximately every .50" across tape length.
